Show Myron Cottam EHS Graduate Takes Over As Principal ESCALANTE Enthusiasm and a strong sense of pride in his school will mark the administration of Escalante's new teaching principal Myron Cottam. Cottam's special pride and special , interest stem from his own days as a student at Escalante High from which he graduated not too many years ago. For the past seven years he has taught science, German and history at Escalante after beginning his teaching career at Mount Jordan Junior High School in Salt Lake City. A graduate of Brigham Young University with a zoology major and a German minor, he served a mission for the LDS Church in Germany in 1968-70. He tor k additional education courses at Southtrn Utah State College in Cedar City Cottam was born in Panguitch and reared in Escalante. His wife, Sanette, was born in Phoenix, Ariz. They met at BYU where she graduated in art. They have four children Travis, 7, Melanie, 5, Garrett, 3, and Nicole, 1. Life in a rural community appeals to the Cottams where the beauty of the area provides endless possibilities for her painting and allows him to enjoy ranching and the raising of livestock. Esclaante's declining enrollment present! a challenge for any principal, Cottam noted, but also permits for certian unique advantages not available in schools with large enrollments. Excited about the school year ahead, Cottam hopes to build a good rapport with the community, all the while urging students to set their goals high. In addition to his administrative duties as principal he will be teaching geology, biology and some special education. |
