Show Garfield Students Ready SUSC Science Fair Event Junior and senior high school students in Garfield County have been invited to participate in the Southern Utah Regional Science Fair which will be held March 28 at Southern Utah State College. Science students from Panguitch, Bryce Valley and Escalante High schools have the opportunity to compete against students from 23 other schools in southern and central Utah and parts of Nevada and Arizona for fair honors according to Paul C. Burgoyne, SUSC associate professor of biology and fair director. Entries will be judged on a regional basis and six winners will be chosen to attend the 29th International Science and Engineering Fair May 9-14 at Anaheim, Calif . In addition, full-tuition scholarships to attend SUSC will be awarded two of the winning senior students. The public is invited to attend the fair. Exhibits will be open between 10 : 30 and noon and again between 1 and 4 p.m. in the SUSC War Memorial Fieldhouse. "The Regional Science fair is held annually for two major reasons," Dr. Burgoyne said. "The first is to give students a chance to do some actual scientific experimentation. To successfully complete a project, they must follow scientific methodology, first forming a hypothesis, doing the necessary experimentation and finally proposing a theory for their work. "Each experiment is judged for the purity of science involved. Judges determine if it is a creative venture or just a redoing of something like a rediscovery of the wheel." "A second major reason for holding the fair is that it allows students to gain some recognition.
