Show Escalante Woman's Exceptional Quilt Wins Top Honors in Utah's 'Great Quilt Contest' ESCALANTE The quilt selected by judges as the best quilt in Utah at the Great Quilt Contest was made by Mrs Yukon Norman, Escalante The award - winning quilt was one of nearly 10,000 entries received in the competition sponsored by the U. S. Historical Society, Good Housekeeping and the Museum of American Folk Art "This was the largest quilt contest ever conducted in the world," Robert Kline, president of the U.S. Historical Society said "Both the quality and quantity of entries was far greater than we anticipated, and demonstrated the skill and diligence of many talented people." The quilts were judged on overall beauty and attractiveness, design, interpretation, color selection and combination, appropriateness of materials used, quilting technique and workmanship and originality of design and interpretation. Judges for the contest were Erica Wilson, designer and trustee of the I' S. Historical Society; Jean Mailey, textile curator, Metropolitan Museum, Doris Bowman, textile curator, Smithsonian Institute; Phyllis Haders. quilting authority and lecturer, and Cecilia Toth, needlework editor. Good Housekeeping. The beautiful quilt has a horse head in the center and colored squares around the outer part of the quilt. It was one of the 500 quilts to receive recognition in the national contest and the only one from Utah to win. Mrs Norman started quilting when she was 7 and still has the first set of quilt blocks she made She won a set of six American Revolution Patriot Plate, a certificate and two bronze pieces amounting to over $400 Yukon Norman.
