Among the comments from the audience, Mrs. Caryl Hatch, Middle School teacher said about the program "I would feel I would be down grading what we are trying to teach our children in school. The whole series dwells on sex, drugs, liquor, violence and rape and as a teacher I would not be able to face you if I was teaching your children out of the Title I program." The board decided to have the program taken out of the schools, and have the board go through the books as a board and give their opinion as to whether or not the program should be initiated In the schools. Meanwhile the board will find another program that will not only help correct deficiencies in language arts and reading in the secondary whools but will also attempt to teach morals they feel children should learn. Also at the meeting, it was reported that the school finance bill passed by the recent legislature provides for 1683 per weighted pupil unit Using this figure, the following revenue is anticipated for the 1976-77 school year, excluding categorical funds of $6,000 used In library and state library program: (The kindergarten through 12 grade will get 1882.436. Sixty-four .percent of this money will come from state Ux at $748.454 ; local, $381,360 or 33-percent and $38,000 federal, or three-percent By taking the present revenue negotiable to salaries In the county uhlch is $709,212. Subtracting present contract cost at a 9.9-percent Increase $742,618 this leaves the district $33,406 short Add to the negotiable amount of $28,406 which will not be paid out because of retirements there is a $5,237 deficit in salary costs from revenue. Dr. Barney said it will be necessary to make staff adjustments unless a presently contracted teacher resigns or by reassigning teachers from one school to another school. Laurel Holman was concerned that the monies allocated to the Individual schools are not being used to replace equipment such as typewriters and stoves. He suggested that the district retain the monies formerly allocated to the Individual schools and make these replacements. It was agreed that a certain percent be kept by the district for replacement purposes and the rest still be allocated to the schools. Mr. Holman received bids on one 84 passenger bus to be used ' on the Hatch run. The old Hatch 'bus would be placed In the district to be used In activity runs for the various schools. Three bids were recieved, a Tesco Superior for $24,715.81 FOB Und, Ohio plus about $550 to get the bus here. The second bid was a Thomas for $24,696 plus $550 for delivery here. The third bid which was accepted was the BlueBlrd for $24,429.75 FOB Valley, Ga., plus $600 for delivery here. The bid from U and S Motors was accepted. Mrs. Shirlene Collins was appointed as secretary in the district office. Karen Rae Coyle was appointed as a substitute teacher in the Escalante Schools. For several years the school lunch facility at Escalante was grossly Inadequate, Dr. Barney said and they did not remodel because it was not considered as a priority. Now the state fire marshal has issued an ultimatum to either update, build new facilities or close school lunch. It was decided that a couple of contractors make a bid on remodeling the old South Ward church building and bring the estimate to next meeting. Because of teacher adjustments discussed earlier It was decided that the appointment of a new supervisor for the Panguitch Intermediate school be tabled |
