church of 0 jesus christ of 0 latter day saints died at his home 1143 1145 south ninth east street saturday evening at he was 93 years of 0 age death was not unexpected for president penrose had been in a serious condition since september and seemed on the point 0 of death several times informed ot of the death ot of president penrose and asked tor for au an expression therein president heber J grant ot of the L D S church paid his dead colleague the following tribute I 1 charles IV penrose penrose was in my judgment one of 0 the greatest men the church ot of jesus christ ot of lat ter day saints has yet produced he was also one ot of its greatest defenders as well as one of the foremost champions of its faith and creed for ten years from the time he was about 20 years old he labored for the church without purse or hope of 0 reward and as a young man had charge of all the missions from scandinavia to the cape of good hope 1 I do not remember the time when I 1 did not know him tor for he was a man when I 1 was yet a youth and during all these years he labored with tongue and pen to spread the gospel his efforts were untiring and he continued au an active worker until just a few months ago in spite ot of his advanced age in losing president penrose the church has lost one ot of the greatest and most leaders it ever had mr air penrose was born february 4 1832 at camberwell Cam berwell london england being ot of a naturally studious and inquiring turn ot of mind with quick perception and remarkable memory he speedily mastered at school the corn com rv mon rudiments rudiment 0 o education i he read the scriptures when only 4 years old and early was well versed in the doctrines ot of the bible this paved the way for his acquaintance with and subsequent acceptance of mormonism he joined joine d the church of 0 jesus christ ot of latter day saints in london may 14 and was the only member ot of his fathers fa family mily to embrace the faith in after ten years of service 3 in fhe he church he was released as president ot of the london conference and emigrated to america lie he crossed in the sailing ship underwriter living livan in the steerage with passenger ass engert during the thirty days from rom liverpool to new ie w york he also helped care f for or th them em through the states aud and up p the th missouri river he crossed the plains driving his own ox teams with his family and his cifes relatives this journey required eleven weeks arriving in utah he settled in in davis county during his three years residence at farmington n he was ordained one of th the presidents of the fifty sixth quorum of seventy in therall the tall fall of 1861 1 at the sa i acita tion of apostle ezra T benson he re moved to cache valley and again la 1 bored tor for a home teaching school in the winter he had scarcely secured some land a log cabin and lot when he was called in april 1865 to go to england on a mission and was notified to be in salt lake by may alay alst 1st in company with forty other missionaries sion slon aries in charge of captain william R preston elder penrose set upon his second journey across the plains with mule teams but walking most of the way f arriving in england elder penrose was sent to preside over the essex conference on june 6 he was appointed to preside over the london conference the last two years of his mission lie he assisted in editing the mil cental star under president franklin D richards 0 bat at the close of the emigration sea son of he was released and sailed for home reaching salt lake city after having valuable service in 1911 he was made second counselor to president joseph F r smith and in 1918 was again appointed to the same office under president heber J grant on march 10 1921 he was made first counselor to president grant upon the death of the late anthon H lund in recognition of his unusual ability and achievements the degree of doctor of laws was conferred upon him by the brigham young
