Show District Health Nurses Receive Child Training Two southwest Utah District Health Department nurses have received special training and developed expertise in providing assistance to developmental disabled infants and children. Clo Manutie R.N., of St. George spends more than one full day each week performing this service in Washington and Iron counties. Barbara Lawson R.N, of Kanab provides this service la Kane and Garfield counties. Both nurses are aware that not all families with handicapped or devdopmentally disabled children are aware of this program and are anxious to extend hdp to all those who can benefit from it. According Jo Dr. David Trafton, medical director of the district health department, early intervention is necessary to maximize the learning potentail of infants bora with organic deficiencies or defects and to minimize the developmental retardation which other wise is inevitable and Irreversible. This program is designed to assist the parents of handicapped infants and children under age 3 to take advantage of the period during which the most rapid growth and development takes place In order to develop the child's full potential and prevent or reduce secondary handicaps, caused by deprivation of stimulation that lead to needless debilitation and dependence In later schooling and adult life. As a result of similar ' programs In other communities, many devdopmentally disabled children have been entered Into regular dasses at school, or helped so that thdr disabilities require leu extensive special services. i |
