Show Region Students To Show Knowledge at SUSC Fair CEDAR CITY - Promising young scientists from Bryce Valley High School, Tropic; Escalante High School and Panguitch High School will show off their knowledge in the Southern Utah Regional Science and Engineering Fair competition March 25 at Southern Utah State College, Cedar City. The annual fair features winning science projects from high school and junior high students. They will compete for a number of prizes and awards including a chance to attend the National Science Fair May 12-17 in Oklahoma City. "We've had a good turnout in the past and expect even more entries this year," Joe Comp, SUSC associate professor of chemistry and fair director, said. Comp said an expected 300 participants would enter competition this year with four winners chosen to attend the Oklahoma fair. Ten majors prizes will be offered by the armed forces, national companies and societies. An additional 12 trophies for first, second and third place winners in physical and biological sciences in junior and senior high divisions will be awarded. "Trophies as well as the four trips to the National Science Fair for winners and their chaperones are funded by donations from businesses and interested persons throughout the area," Comp said. A grand prize sweepstakes award will be given the winning school; last year the award went to Woodward Junior High School, St. George. Visitors are welcome to visit the fair from 1-8 p.m. Comp said. A banquet will be held that evening at 6 p.m. for participants. "This is a good experience for interested students to work independently and to meet other students interested in the sciences," Dr. Comp said. |
