Show I WRITE---RIGHT NOWII I Time was when we could sort of tit back and expect our elected representatives take care or matters affecting ua which fall into their sphere of operation Unfortunately we in Utah can no longer do that. Too much of the land of our state falls under the absentee landlordism of the Federal government. , Representatives and senators not of our choosing have too much to say about what happens la our own state. These outside senators and representatives, not having any concern for the well-being of our citizens, and not being answer able to them at the polls, are thereby rendered too insensitive to things concerning the state and its citizens. They respond too easily to the pressures exerted by manipulated pressure groups. Make-believe outdoors clubs, consisting of a well-paid people-manipulator and a padded mailing list, seem to have more to say with them about what happens to the lands of our state than the state's own citizens These so-called "Preservationists" (the people haters) would put miles and miles of Utah's Federally-owned lands Into "wilderness" areas . . forbidding them for all time to the people of the state. Without knowing, what great wealth might lie beneath the surface, without caring what Utahns might want to do with these lands in the future, the preservationists want to seal them off forever from the people. The "Preservationists" are fighting the building of an access road which would merely permit people to look at this wonderfully scenic country. Their Mlzsard of letters fighting the road was started to Congressmen before we were even aware there was a fight on. We must do something to offset this phony paper snowstorm. We must write to all of the people who have aay In this matter. So ait down NOW and write In favor of needed access roads to and through the Glen Canyon Recreation area. Write Senator Allen Bible, Senator Wallace F. Bennett, Senator Frank E. Moss, Representative Laurence J. Burton, Governor Calvin Ramptoa. The congressmen can be reached at the Senate or House Office Buildings, Washington. D.C.; Governor Rampton at the State Capitol. Salt Lake City. Also write our local Road Commissioner Clem Church backing his stand in fsvor of the reed . . give him some smmunitlon with which to go into this fight. At a recent hearing In Washington one of the Preservationists stated "We still mourn Glen Canyon." They would take away the entire Lake Powell complex, a pleasure and a joy for untold hundreds of thousands already and for untold future millions of visitors, and give It back to the two or three dozen who used to "shoot" the Colorado rapids there at great expense and benefitting one or two money-making guides, |
