Show BREAK MIM IN ah PI ELI QUICKLY REPAIRED brigham city was plunged into darkness sunday evening at about as a result of a break in the large wooden stave pipeline which conveys the water from the intake near mantua to the city electric power house east of this city the break oc cured about halt half way up the canyon and was caused by a large boulder striking the pipe line an and d penetrating the staves in several places the water shot out onto the hillside and had it not been tor for quick action ot of A M jensen of 0 mantua in notifying mayor james knudson who was passing up the canyon and saw the break it may have resulted in the washing out ot of a large portion ot of the line which would have caused the shutting down ot of the power plant for many days mr jensen Is to be commended for his thought falness and prompt action when mayor knudson was notified ot of the damage at about evening he immediately got in touch with city manager ruel M eskelsen and they in company with electrician W V R IN mehner went up the cany canyon on to the location of 0 the trouble they clemed chimed the hillside to where the water was gushing from the pipeline and immediately saw tile the danger in case the flow ot of water was nas not stopped within a comparatively short time mr eskelsen continued up the canyon to turn off the water at the in take mr mehner went back tor for material and help to repair the damage while mayor knudson continued on up the hillside to survey the situation and learn the cause ot of the dislodgement of the huge rock about yards above the pipeline the mayor discovered a large rock that had become cracked by the shifting shit ting of 0 the earth snow and water had worked in under a portion ot of the rock and the frost had loosened it the warm sun of 0 sunday had melted the ice an and d loosened the rock which broke off and came rolling down the hillside lodging against the pipeline A force of men were immediately put to work and in about six hours from the time the I 1 mayor was notified ot of the break the pipeline had been repaired and the plant put into operation and the city lighted again A similar break occurred in the pipe line in november 1922 just a little above the place where the present trouble arose at that time the accident occurred at night and was not discovered until the water had washed out the gravel on the hillside letting the pipe line down for a distance of probably a hundred feet As a result the electric plant was shut down tor for nearly a week this same thing would have happened sunday had it not been tor for prompt action ot of the city officials |
