Show ESCALANTE CHIT CHAT BY FAY ALVEY The weather is still mild and nice and folks are picking up.pinenuts, punching cattle and in general keeping busy and out of mischief; Arthur Mclnelly, Dee ,Haws, Usher Spencer, McKay and Gail Bailey have been taking cattle and pigs to the market in Richfield. Dee Haws did not go out of the sheep business, in fact he is going in deeper, went to Richfield to get some rams, his wife accompanied him, they also made a trip to Panguitch where Elda had a medical checkup. Ha Alvey spent two days and nights in, the Panguitch hospital for Xrays and treatment 'following a fall, she thought she had broken her back but it was sprained and bruised, and she was right in the middle of housecleanlng too. Jess Barker is learning tc walk all over, again with the help of a chair. We thought that Roland Porter was almost well the way he gets around but in talking with him found that he stll has a cast on his leg, with blisters under It and may have to have his leg operated on later. Rodney Cottam is still wearing a cast and will be for some time. This is a noisy time of the year, tho calves are shut up to be! weaned and the noisy little "critters never shut their mouths. There Is an oil company bringing in men and eqiupment to make a hole here somewhere southeast of town. Reed Wooley Is a man who Is boss in his own house, in spite of the protests of his wife he took the Job of Cop againi he had served fifteen years before, so they both know;what he was getting into. The Usher Spencers made a business trip to Richfield; Leda Mae .Foster and children of Tropic spent Sunday after-nooniwith their Mother and Grandmother, Minnie" Davis. Mrs. Ruby Craycraft of Richfield and Dr. Lars Peter-son of Spanish jFork were here visiting their mother Amanda Mitchell and .other relatives, then Ruby stayed here until Sunday when William and Mandy took her back home. Dicey Porter, has left town for the winter. Earl Woolseytook her to Salina where she will visit her sister Lcola Heaps, then visit her way to New Mexico where she will stay with, her daughter Glenna Banks. Mae Vonn Taylor took her small son Jerry to Panguitch for medical attention. Mr. and Mrs. Beumont Griffin spent a week in Salt Lake City with her twin .sister. Gurena Robinson is home after spending some time in Richfield .helping her daughter and son-in-law, the Kay Staples, get moved Into their new home, she brought her granddaughter home for a visit; their son Blake Dee went to Salt Lake City and took over the job that his sister Rho-da has been holding- down. Aunt Susan Heaps came back from her stay in Boulder looking pert as can be. Mary R. Mclnelly went , to Salt Lake City to attend the wedding of her granddaughter, one of Frank's girls. Lester Mclnelly came from the City and got his mother, Eliza and took her away for the winter; Annie Alvey went to Tropic to visit awhile with her son Royal and family then she will go North, Paul Hunter and Sox Spencer have been,remodeling Eu-zell Cottam's house; Lark Reynolds and Kendall Dutton of Cannonville shingled the south slope of the DUP house (to some of you it is th old Tithing Office), the DUP members made a quilt and are selling chances on It to help with the expense, so if some nice old lady comes to your house asking for money treat her kindly: " (continued Inside) ESCALANTE j Tom Iteynolds took his dad J Cliff to Salt Lake City for a i medical checkup, and at Fort Douglas they examined him ' from A to Z but did not tell him anything except that the report would be sent by mail, so ho don't know what shape ho is In. The oldsmobile dealer brought Mayor Claron Griffin a new car (he does that every year) , the Layton Griffins took the one Claron got a year ago, the Lorin Cottam's took Layton's car and the Doyle Cottams took Lorin's pickup. Alpine Shirts pnd family came from Cedar City where he Is teaching and spent Sunday with his parents, Morris and Neta Shirts; Neta went to Salt Lake City last week where she spent two days attending a Health Clinic at the University of Utah Union Bldg, The missionary farewell was .held as scheduled with a good attendance, quite a number of folks from the other side of the Stake attended; the program was sponsored by the Missionary class and under the direction of Neta Shirts. Invocation was by Lor enzo Griffin; talk. Bp. Lorell Munson; song, "My Testimony" by the Singing Mothers; talk, Pres. J. Clyde Spencer; organ solo .by Janene Bauer; talk by Frank Day who is head of the Institute in Cedar City Benediction was by Pres. E. Dee Ifo.ws. After the program the Missionary class gave them a party and .shower with games and refreshments, they got enough socks and hankies to last them the full time if' they will keep their toenails trimmed and don't have too many colds. The. boys parents took them to Salt Lake City to enter the Mission home. Hilda Roundy, Sariah Alvey, Nethella Griffin and Ruby Griffin went to Panguitch to meet Senator Frank Moss, the Democrat from Utah. Gef. aid Thompson and Darrel Alvey went to Kanab to work on the light line with Arnold Alvey; the other Alvey, broth-ers, Smith and Slim, also Ga-den Gates came home for the weekend and Gaden went to Panguitch for a medical check up; Slim took his kids to Richfield for dental appointments and I stayed to do chores, my official garb has a pair of high , '. : ; ' boots and on finishing at night something wiggled in my left boot, and on removing it found a little wobbly mouse walking up my ankle just like he owned the Joint, the dance I did could not have been classed professional but what it lacked in grace and rhythm it made up in action and sound effects, Some of the .local fellows got on the light line In that Cottonwood country, Randal Lyman got a job as Boss, it's a good thing .too m he has a very sore finger, but he can use it to point out to the fellows what to do. We spent a long beautiful day in Panguitch last Thursday, mostly at the court house; Gwen Lyman and I read minutes of the meetings from 1928 up Into the thirtys and if those County Officials did not do more than was recorded they really had a snap. The Frank Colemans, back-ed up by June Barron representing the . Farmer's Home Administration, bought all the land, water and home for sale In the Valley ; , Harve Bailey sold them his home, the Ott Roundys, the Clyde Kings, the Randal Lymans, the Slim Al-veys and Blake Robinson sold them either land or water or both. Of course June had his secretary Nina Steele and legal crutch, Bruce Parker, there, and .we had some very interesting and heated arguments and were told off proper by Mr. Barron who wields the Big Stick. We finally set- tied everything and parted friends (I think). Jim Jackson, an auctioneer1 from Netf York, is here with a traveling companion whom he calls Madam X, they are, making their headquarters at tho Moqui .Motel; Philo Pratt went with him to Widtsoe to show him some rocks he piled up fifteen years ago but it was gone .or badly scattered. Mr. Jackson made the local DUP very proud and happy by. presenting them with a little Jewel case In the shape, of a Beehive, .the lid contains a photo of a pretty young girl; pictures of this and a write up came out In the Garfield County News on May 7, 1059; the only clue he had to ownership was that it had been left in aware house by people who had returned East from Utah. Allot the local DUP members join Captain Meletta Cottam in thanking Mr. Jackson for this delightful antique and Invite him when he visits our town again to come and see our collection of relics.
