Show Spray Days Are Here Ti COUNTY AGENTS NOTES By .Harold Lindsay The alfalfa weevil are presenting a problem in most parts orthe cdunty this year. You were warned that we were to expect a heavy Infes tatlon and we have them. There was very little spraying done in the county and as a result much hay that should go to the cattle are being cat-en by the weevil. Fields Jo... Henrieville and Cannonville were damaged to somo extent. In checking the fields In the Panguitch area I find ,very heavy infestations In many of the fields already. After the larvae eats into the terminal bud, growth stops and the longer the alfalfa is left standing the less forage there Is left. When you can see that there Is heavy damage and before the leaves start to turn white it should be cut. Just a word to the sheep raisers in the county about Blue Tongue disease in sheep, The quicker you get the sheep vaccinated the better. .Everyone in the. area of the county which had the disease last year, Tropic pnd Escalante bv all means, should vaccinate It may be advisable to vacdn- ale in the Panguitch and Hatch areas. An outbreak was reponed in the Alton area of Kane County last week. After you get the disease it Is' too late. Areas where grasshoppers can bo found hatching sd there are from 6 to 8 per square yard it Is time to spray. This is best done before they reach tho flying ago as less area has to be sprayed. We hope that the spraying that has been: Hone on the' streets in Panguitch and Escalante will keep the weed growth down. Those . snake1 weeds in the pastures can be controlled by spraying with about 2 quarts, of 2-4D to the acre. Those that come back next year should be spot sprayed again. If something Isn't done they will take over more of the pasture. They should bo sprayed during the bloom stage for best results. Wild iris can best be sprayed Just after bloom with the seme chemical. |
