Show AJE.C. Says Panguitch Safe From Strontium 90 Danger Radiation levels fromStron-tium-90 in Panguitch are ' considerably below the maximum permissible levels," according to information provided for Senator Wallace F. Bennett by the Atomic Energy Commis-' sion, Dr. C. L. Dunham, director of the AEC Division of Biology and Medicine, sent the senator a list of milk samplings from six Southern Utah conb munities, taken after tests at the Nevada test site. All the samplings, he said, were well within the permissible limits. The highest reading in Panguitch was on Sept. 8, 1957, when it reached 37.3 sunshine units. On Oct. 21, 1957 it reached 26.2, and on Sept. 20, 1957 It reached 17. Highest readings for the other areas were: Antimony, 13.6; Fremont, 12.1; Milford 2.7; St. George, 1.6; Veyo, 8.2. The maximum permissible level is 80 sunshine units However, Dr. Dunham emphasized that this level is permissible as a continuous level over a long period of time. "Yearly averages of stron-tium-90 content in milk are more meaningful in evaluating potential hazards than are transient levels. It would be expected that the yearly averages would be less than those attained during a nuclear test series," ' Dr. Dunham said. Yearly averages for the test areas are not available, according to Dr. Dunham. |
