Show Conservation Dam At Sheep Creek To Be A Major Project One Of Most Important In Area SOIL CONSERVATION- 0UR SOIL OUR STRENGTH The She6p,4 Creek' Watershed committee, and the planning party met recently to complete the, final work plan for the proposed Sheep Creek Cooperative Field Demonstration Area. This project, which is in the Colorado River drainage four miles southeast of Can-nonville, is being sponsored by the Paria River SCD ana various government agencies. Representatives of th.ff Bureau of Land Management, Extension Service, Forest Service, Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Soil Conservation Service and private land owners participated in the meeting. One objective of the project "is vto reduce sediment damages to existing and pro-' posed downstream reservoirs on the Colorado River. Other important i objectives are to improve forage production on the watershed, reduce soil erosion, demonstrate treatment methods! that can be used elsewhere and evaluate the effects of watershed treatment on sediment production, forage production and soil erosion. The plan calls for extensive treatment of large parts of the watershed. This treatment will include range seeding, construction of gully checks and drop structures, juniper clearing, pitting and trencn-, ing to hold water on the land and fencing to control grazing.- In addition, to .the land treatment measures on the watershed a largo erth fill sediment retention structure is planned. If the work plan is approved this structure will be built across Sheep Creek where the Cannonville - Kanab County road crosses the Creek. |
