Show The Word From Boulder s HY NETHELLA GRIFFIN The trouble with me as a columnist Is that I am not an expert at anything. I cannot ; give advice to tho lovelorn nor I help married couples with their I difficulties. As for what' prop- r In social behavior I can think of only one Item never, no matter even If you are a very Important person, should you put chicken bones on the clean tablecloth. I cannot give helpful household hints, and all 1 know about gardening, chicken raUln and dairying Is what Kay llendlxsen and Ivan Willis tell me. The only thing that I pro-bably know as much about ai an) one else Is politics. At least that Is one subject in which specialized knowledge doesn't reem to be required. Everyone thinks he knows as much about what Is wrong with the government ai anyone else, and pro. bably does. As a starter I'd like to hear a good answer to the question as to why the stoppage of work on tho Escalante-llenrlevllle road. Tho "exhaustion of funds" explanation seems weak 1 here seems to be plenty of money for road work In other parts ot the state. Our county commissioners should demand that the state match federal funds not only to complete that long promised toad, but to extend the road on through lloulder and on to Join the road In Mayne county. This road would form an nrU-ry through which would flow the life blcod of great development for this whole country. Perhaps I should not say so, but It looks as It any other country In the world that nteded development of Its re-tources as much as dons our part ol southern Utah, would find the United States ready to give It to them. That the recent work on the Long Canyon road by the county crew In connection with the Scott Uranium comjany was highly successful was demonstrated Friday when Orion Harney brought an eleven-ton load of uranium ore up the ddgway without using his lowest gear. Ha took the load on around the east end of the lloulder mount aln. This was before the rains of course. (Wonderful rains, Just what we've been hoping and praying fur these rosny months.) Hut they did damage, the roads temporarily. Leland Haws and party got stuck, with a very light load on the dugway that the uranium came up the day previous. And the state road men worked all day Sun-da) to repair the damage near the Calf Creek bridge only to have another Hood that evening take out the bridge completely. More and larger culverts ar nteded and hard surfaced road that u little rain can't ruin. Mrs, Flora Hard well and her husband Mark 'Riardwell brought r group of distinguished women to lloulder on Friday. Mrs, Iiene King conducted the party on a trip to the Circle Cliffs-silver Falls country. The visiters were Mi JIattie Kilgore, national demonstrator for the Kerr Canning company. Miss El-na Miller of the I.'SAC extension division, and Mies Etlyn Ulan-chard, head of the nutrition department of the Federal extension service, Trucks and drilling equipment for the Scott Uranium company arrived Saturday, Mr. Donahoo, core driller for the company, Is here ready to get operations started. Mrs. Donahoo Is with him, Other employ, cos oX thf company with their families are expected this week. Arthur Alvey Is recovering : front a major operation at the I'angultch hospital. He has ben i employed for the past month i : i i or so at the Arnold Barney uranium camp from where he was brought up last Thursday seriously 111. Mrs. Arthur Alvey Is also being treated at the hospital. Mr. and Mrs Harry Zabrlskle pnd family of Falrvlew visited the Do) le Moosman's last week. Their son Carl remained for another week's stay and Cleta Mooxman returned home with the Zabrlskles. Elvon Poulstn returned to alt I-ake Monday with his uncle Ie Curtis for a two-wee vielt. Mr. Curtis and a party of friends were here over the week nd for fishing Mr. and Mrs. Dean Shurtz. their son Gary Dean, Mrs Mar-joile Griffin, and Mrs. Marian Lyman of Salt Iake were visit, era at the Clyde King home and at Escalante for the 24th of July holiday. Most of the Houlder people attended the two-day celebration rnd the two evenings' dunces at Escalante. Mr. and Mrs Lester Baker nt-ttnded 'the Mitchell family reunion on Friday and Saturday at Richfield and Fish Lake. Mm. Janette Mortensen and I attended the funeral of her brother and my uncle Jacob Strlngham at Sigurd on Friday. |
