Show SOIL CONSERVATION nv CLYDE IiOVK "Soil weakened by erosion weakeni the Nation." According to Patrick Henry."He li the great-patriot who stops the mwt guinea." George Hamilton of Escalanle appreciates the valor of a good leveling Job. He had a piece leveled which required cuts from 1 to 6 feet. That's pretty deep, but with a heavy fertlllier ptogram his production on that piece was equal to the rest of his farm. The piece was class three land because of the slope when he finished with It he had class onfl land. This year he plans on leveling class two land to have class one land when he's through. Leveling, In and of Itself, Is not the end In sight when these men work a piece of land over. It Is merely the means to an tnd: better and more efficient use of the available Irrigation water. Thurman Spencer of Escalanto leveled 9 acres In 1951. His statement concerning this field was. "My leveling resulted In an even application of water. It's easy to' irrigate. One man can handle more water and easier on that piece than 3 men could before It was leveled. I had the SCS boys stake out a dlteft-aero- the pleee-lor me and I built It where they said. Now I can Just open a gate and get an even flow of water and have.lt spread out the same across the field. I believe I have saved half my Irrigation water as a result of leveling." Saving half of the water means having additional water available for other crops. One of the boys got talking about the high cost of leveling some land. So I asked Neal Llston how. many more acres he was able to Irrigate as a result of water saved while Irrigating a field which had been leveled. "Well", he said "I broke two acres out of brush and I am Irrigating those two acres In addition to the 4 acre piece leveled." When this Is figured out it means the bringing in. of additional land to production with no great cost. "Most of our farm land Is eapa-hie of profitable and permanent production, but land washed or blown away becomes useless. Money you would make pn crops and livestock goes with It." |
