Show Fire Fighting School Held On May 26, the Utah Cooper-atle Fire fighters held a training school In the Utah Parks Company lodge at rtryce Canyon National Park. Ono purpose of the training t-esslon was to present a better understanding of the role of eadi of the 5 governing agencies who. through their combined efforts prevent and suppress wild land fires In Southern Utah. These 5 agencies consisting of State Forestry-and Police, Coun. ty Sheriffs Offices, U.S. Forest Service, Hureau of Land Management, and National Park Service cooperate to control forest and range fires, throughout he proclaimed fire Reason, June 1 through October 31. The 'heme for the school was to emphasize safety and fire behavior, two of the many phases In which a well trained fire fighter must Ik proficient. Forest Ranger nuck Cuskelly, Pangultch, who was chairman of the school committee, reported a good turn out with 33 fire fighters In attendance. He said they had 14 tralnors with some coming from as far as Salt Lake City and Ogden. We are reminded that lt Is unlawful to set or cause to be set a range or forest fire during the proclaimed season. Anyone desiring to burn during these 5 months must obtain a burning permit. Local officers Issuing these permits are: Sheriffs De-ward Woodard and Reed Wool-ty In Garfield County and Sher Iff Mason Meeks In Kane County. Forest Hangers, Heed Thomson, Bscalante; Jack Large, Clr-clevllle; Grant Williams and Buck Cuskelly, Pangultch; Bureau of Land Management District Officer, M. H. Gait, Kanab. Mr. Cuskelly says forest fire detection and suppression In Southern Utah is heavily dependent on local residents and tourists. He explained the er diem guard system used by the Forest Service and BLM where local ranchers volunteer their services to act as lookouts and f mokechasera. There are many of these scattered throughout Garfield and Kane Counties who have contributed a great deal to fire control. Remember, folks, a fire pre-ented costs nothing to suppress. Twenty-flve percent of our fires are man -caused and can be prevented. |
