Show m DOR aa OIL I 1 nowhere in the west or south and 1 I have visited tile the kansas oklahoma and texas oll oil fields have I 1 see seen n a an 1 oil 01 field as easily developed and as CERTAIN or getting big results as there is in fit the rozell basin on the north shore ot of great salt lake these are ae tile the words used by P J donohue E a prominent geologist in it ills his report covering ills his findings after mak ling jug an exhaustive research of the oil evidences id ellees in the rozel basin and the t testimony tini ony increases in force as the tull depth of the moaning meaning ot of the words are comprehended in ili simple terms tile the testimony of oc this geologist is that box elder county lias has the greatest oil prospects of 0 any section ol of the country no matter where it may be located lilt but the tull fail force of these facts do 10 rot not come home to one who has not made a visit to the workings and seen with ills his own eyes eves in ili order to get i first hand information a party parly comprised of 0 11 V 17 call D 0 etolil president S norman lee joseph N stohl tand and tile the writer motored out to the lake shore south ot of rozel station on monday and spent several hours looking oyer over tile tha project of the he asphalt von coni pay of utah the first company on oil the ground with a drilling apparatus there ate several more companies making ready to begin development work one of 0 which lias has its rig at promontory station at the present time I 1 being uninitiated in oil lore and having never beheld an oil well the sensation produced liy by anticipation and i realization was something unusual and liard hard to explain but the silent cantelli Ip clation pla lation tion of an all actual condition along with evidences ol of the he reality ot of it which will mean millions of dollars flowing out from the of the he earth into the laps of those who are de developing ve loping this tiling thing almost tag slag the imagination tor for we have be boig p nal so accustomed tomed to rl regard ins that section of OT the e c S J ici tit place tor for jack rabbits and absolutely worthless so far as its ability to produce anything beneficial to mank mankind ild is coner concerned ned but there the drilling drill inK outfit ore it pile plit platform form directly underneath the boom was the great six toot foot steel caisson in which the thick black substance was teething seething aid abid bubbling there was the material itself felt of smelt smeared on our hands a and nd clothes and otherwise tested out to prove even to such an all unlearned one as we are that the hie substance is actually oil in its composition and tile the best proof of oil Is oil therefore why the necessity for for doubt or even skepticism ot of the slightest degree what one actually sees who visits rozel hozel point Js is a company of hasy busy men engaged in constructing a pier from the shore out to the drilling ap which stands upon a pier platform about the length ot of one ot of bour our city blocks the long way from the shore stepping into a boat tile visitor is quickly transferred to the oil well workings and there the project so tar far as it has gone is reve revealed ailed in its entirety the water at that point Is about seven teet feet deep but when the drill was installed the lake lied bed was dry the rising water has forced the workmen to drive piles and extend the platform several times in order to keep out lout of tile the way of the water and it is now eti estimated mated that there will be no further raising of the lake the well that Is now being operated I 1 ed there are two others consists of a steel caisson six feet in di diameter ampter which is 18 thirty teet feet long and has been dl driven en In lake bed about twenty teet fet extending on from the end of this caisson Is another smaller one 21 inch casing which runs rains down to the full depth ot of the well feet inside this casing Is an eight inch casing ing which comes right up through the big ca caisson isoa and itself is equipped with a two inch pipe alpe running down to the bottom to carry the small compressed sed air pipe which furnishes the power that forces the thick material up through the large pipe into the caisson of its own accord the oil and asphalt flows up through the casing into the caisson tilling filling it to a depth of two feet above the lake cleyr leyr 1 the material running at the present time at the rate of 0 10 barrels per day the interesting thing in connection with the extraction of the material Is its native state it Is quite thin thin but as it approaches approached the surface of i the well nell nud and passes through the cool cd part of 0 the lake bed it becomes ver very y thick and so the engineer has had to insulate the two to inch pipe s so 0 ilat it will warm up the material and keep it flowing dowing freely but the pow d er which really starts the material in a vigorous manner on oil its jociney to the surface is compressed air which is carried lo in the oil chambers under tile the lake ake bed through the small pipe which tutis runs down through the two inch pipe in the large laige eight inch casing this was an all experiment that the engineer in ili charge of the workings made with very marked success to determine the most efficient method to adopt in getting the leavy oil and asphalt to the surface the air Is carried in ill a small compressor compressor tank fastened to the I 1 side ot of the rg and it is sent down to the bottwin odah cabie e oil bed with the result pa that delthe 1 air struggles to esi escape capo cape it brin brings S ek the heavy material along immense cal v ssan has been filled up with it in a s seething kiihl g boiling mass the and made to overflow A into the lake it being i b dollt fall fully one hundred 14 barrels 0 of material was lost in fit the overflow aa a I 1 M ft As the caisson cal 8 R I 1 oll is filled up by the action of the al arthe etlie material is pump elf ei into waiting barrels on oil the platform and made ready for shipment either to the refinery efi nery or to such destination as it may tind find teady ready use awaiting it this process af air ew extraction traction it should be lias has been exper ami there forthe equipment was mas only large enough to make the experimental tent arthe S the large air cuip ment liaa not ilot yet been installed but wen iti it I chrow the asphalt out olit of the casing ili in a great stream at the 1 ate of extraction 1 1 liy by grai lili which amounts 10 loketi t ali one alt well i J one buti hundred dred dollars worth 0 I 1 1 I 1 w per nion til tj 1 tion emch the air aylia P I 1 Z ic e jesih al well v n I 1 will have tit an estimated pr production capacity of SO 50 barrels per day the great mass of thick illicit material winch which overflowed into the lake lias has been carried to lo the shore where it has painted the rocks and formed or ineil pools all along for a distance of several miles while directly ay u underneath Z the rig within the sheltered area odthe y piled platform a heavy layer floats upon the surface of the llie lake like a great thick blanket moving with the action ot of the water but refusing to cling to the wood piling because 01 of the action of the salt water which has the effect of 0 removing the oil and I 1 rendering I 1 id e r I 1 g the substance all but useless but stringy like molasses taffy A A few teel feet from tills this well at the end of a pier which reached to the south from the drilling platform is another all Oilier welt well which however is with out a caisson an ali eight inch casing projects above tile the water line several facet and slowly bubbling babbling from its top comes a thick heavy mass ot of the black material which makes its way laboriously down the sides of 0 tile the casing to be washed into the lake and carried I 1 away by the action ot of the waves there Js is still another well of 0 this same type but which will have to be repaired before further development can lie be carried on because the casing was bent beat by using st it for an all anchorage tor for a heavy freight scow which the company has tor for transportation purposes the drilling through the loose sand and mud in the lake bottom can call be accomplished in two days then the drill strikes a dolon dolomite lite lime stone which is twelve feet thick and it requires another two days clays to drill th thru ru this material into the asphalt bed therefore in tour four days a well is completed and ready to produce its quota of the material which has a commercial value in its raw state ot of 10 per barrel the material is composed ot of 59 per cent oil and 37 per cent asphalt which makes it almost per cent valuable and usable the com coal now on the ground with its rig the asphalt company ot of utah contemplates drilling several more wells tight right around where the present wells have been sunk in order that a greater outlet may be provided to tor the escape ot of the thick material thus making it possible to force all the wells from one feeding of 0 coni compressed pressed air just what the analysis ot of the neater material shows under a chemical test is set forth in the following table the analysis alisis having been made by 11 H continued on page three BOX ELDER EL DER GREAT OIL DEPOSITS continued from first page officer co chemists of salt lake city water and gas 10 pet fuel oil pet medium lubricating oil pet heavy lubricating oil pet asphalt pitch 37 pet non 22 pet total pet pel the company has leased over acres of 0 land part of which Is now under water the lease extends a mile out into the lake from the shore line and several miles hack back landwards lan dwards as well is as east and west along the shore line three other development companies have taken the adjoining leases right up to the line so that for or a great distance in that particular section the land has all been leased for or development purposes the lenora mining company has its manager mr on the ground and the drilling rig was on the flat cars standing on the promontory station siding as our party drove by on monday one ot of the rigs which will be installed by the other companas comp anys will be a new keystone outfit of latest model which further farther emphasizes th the faith which these development companies have in the project I 1 in talking with air james J chambers president of 0 the asphalt company he stated that it is the intention of his company later on to drill on down thirteen or fifteen hundred feet through the first and second strata of bf sandstone where it is confidently hoped the natural crude oil will be found many years ago the corey company sank a well feet deep ou on the shore just out of reach of the waves from the lake lahe and close to the property Dro perty now being develops develop devel oWl but the work ended at that depth and from what lias has now been developed it is confidently fi stated that had the company gone down another three hundred feet it would have found oil the eight inch casing heavy drill and part of the drilling outfit lies there in a crumpled mass as mute evidence of tile the effort that was made but tile the lake bottom is not the only place where the evidences of 0 oil are to be found back a dozen miles from froin the lakeshore lake shore the do limite sandstone outcroppings outcrop pings can ile be found in great abundance on the ley ranch owned jay by stohl brothers and anal it V lall th the e eveldn evidences es aresu are just st as pronounced as aa they are where the present development work is going on oil and those gentlemen are ara taking the necessary steps to protect their rights so that they mayr participate in any oil boom that may later develop A prominent geologist spent several days with mr call on the ranch early this spring going over their premises and the surrounding territory and he waxed enthusiastic over what he found he definitely located several points where lie he said he it he had the necessary n ec essary capital would sink a test well ell and he it was who made the remark that there is as much water under the ground in that district as there is water in the lake the spirit of development tor for oil has been caught by the tha ranchers of the promontory and kelton district and the people ot of snowville Snow ville vIlIe ar ans also enthused about it because ot of tile the tact ac that bat most of the transportation tor for the development thus thug tar far has been carried over water from promontory point and thus missed this section the activities now bonig on have not become acome very generally known here but a trip to the workings will be lent to convince the most skeptical and a trip can be made out and return easily in a day and provide a delightful ride as well while the preci present ent development may be handled through some other point the holdings are in box elder county and when the land development begins the materials and products will all al be transported over the southern pacific railroad branch running out of this city which will mean everything to brigham city but the great thing Is that this tremendous wealth is being uncovered in B box ox elder county and the people ot this county will participate a in the blessing through the natural channels I 1 of 0 commerce besides the stohl brothers and mr call there ther e are other ot h er local citizens who are arc interested in development companies and still many ethers others who have hare land holdings in these theae oil bearing sections so that a general oil boom will certainly affect a great many local people directly those desiring to see smell taste or teel feel the product now coming out ot of the well in the lake may call at the news lews N and have their curiosity satisfied as we brought home con sid erable of 0 the material as well as a good sample ot of the lime stone c cap ap rock which covers it in the depths ot or the earth |
