D W. W Brogan has an article entitled The British Shed No Tears for Their Lost Empi Empire e. e in it he says I. I in the nineteenth century the progress of ot English prosperity was in close asT association as as- rr T with the 4 spread of ot a general gen gen- r t 1 eral political and w f economic rell religion Ion Ions r. r s of all sensible f i men The Bank of ot England free fi 1 A trade parliamentary 14 tary government I all increased their range of ot 1 influence influence in in- t. t fluence together And the English I looked on what was largely their work and their B Ban au kh I age profit profit and and I it it good They were satisfied with what they had accomplished It is natural enough today when this world situation has changed to take pretty calmly the decline in the favored historical position of ot Eng Eng- land If the spread of ot English ideas practices and profits has ceased unless are EngS Eng Eng- why worry worry- you S lish 0 w Unless you are arc English h And yet the people who ought to be doing the worrying are the Americans We are taking over where Britain left oil off off and the job is a bigger one than England faced But the average average aver aver- age person in this country will say sayIn sayIn sayin In horror You talk like a Communist Americas America's whole tradition is non nonintervention Of course we had hada a wild period in South America and andIn andin In hi our salad days as a nation we ue somehow acquired what we called Texas although the Mexicans at the time thought It was a part of oi Mexico Mexico Mex Mex- ico and then there's theres Hawaii But those thos days are over See how 2 promptly and politely we return returned d the Philippines to themselves and took our marines out of the banana plantations where they didn't belong belong belong be be- long and md the other day even abandoned abandoned aban aban- our bases in Panama Dont Don't tell me were we're going to establish a second British empire We arent rent TIle The spirit of ot live and let live is just as strong as It ever was in this country Unfortunately however what Brogan calls the spread of ot a general political and economic religion of all sensible men suddenly encountered a force torce that threatened to destroy it when the Germans marched into Poland w and the Japs bombed Pearl Harboro Harbor o It took all America could afford afford atford af at- ford and more than han Britain could afford to stop that force 1 And today another and stronger force is gaining power and there is nobody to stop it but the theS S United States I When British official in London TO a t I said every means short of ot war 1 1 J would be used by the British and American governments to keep Greece within their own strategic and Ideological orbit it didn't make much of a ripple outside of Washington But it was a statement of tremendous import for it means m ans that thelt the Truman doctrine was not S 'S Just a phrase that its implementation S tion is now certain It means that the people responsible for the destiny des des- tiny of ot the United States know that the year of ot decision is here the decision decision decision de de- de- de having been made not in Washington but in the Kremlin just justas as the decision to fight Japan was made not in Washington but in the theoffice theoffice office of ot one squat little man now awaiting a de death sentence in n Tokyo one Hideki Tojo former premier oi of Japan Partisans Succeeded In Soviet Sphere Today it is to make funny cartoons about the third party announced in December by Henry Wallace Yet that third party fits neatly into a plan to wreck our way vay of ot life the plan another part of which was the careful coaching by the Kremlin of ot the partisan fighters in World War ll l. The partisans partisans parti parti- artisans arti- arti sans were formed first to help beat down one of the Soviets Soviet's enemies r.- r. but they also were groomed to dec del de- de 1 c I l stroy representative government in r J their respective countries The partisans were were- were most most successful success success- ful M in th the countries nearest Russia in territory where the Red lIed army army inthe in inthe inthe the guise of ot allies fighting a common 5 enemy gained a foothold which they kept when pe peace ce came and which was used to put i their trained stooges into power In Italy and France they were Unable unable un Un- able to capture completely the partisan parti partie san sari or resistance movements But they did get a grip on both countries which neither France nor Italy dared throw of off until the United 1 States m made de a tacit condition of bf t aid ald The expulsion of the Communist parties from both governments I rt Temporarily at least that much of ot the planned carefully Soviet program program pro pro- gram failed tailed But new steps are being being being be be- ing planned A part of ot the pa pattern of communization Is Communist alliance a alli nIH- ance with the wing left non rusts The Reds cooperate with the Reds non-Reds help them bring about their objectives then slowly dominate dominate domi domi- nate and absorb them One method used by Reds to get rid o of nonCommunist nonCommunist non Com wing left resistance is to help a reactionary government into power Such a reactionary government government govern govern- ment suppresses the nonCommunist non fist left wingers and pushes those surviving deeper Into Communist toils That Is where the Wallace third party fits Into the Kremlin design The Reds hope it will split and weaken the liberals Inthis in inthis inthis this country increase the friction file fric tion between them and the conservatives conservatives conservatives con con- as much as possible aid the conservatives to get into power Then when the reaction sets in the conservatives will be thrown out and the well organ Communists can take over easily casily Greece is a testing point in the Russian American struggle The only way in which the Communist internal aggression there could be checked was for tor Britain and the United States to step in and actually direct the Greek government That was done Much as any my country dislikes dislikes dislikes dis dis- likes having a stronger one run its affairs the United States as a choice of evils is the less unwelcome unwelcome come to the Greeks especially when we come bearing gifts without which the government knows it cannot resist resist resist re re- re- re the Communist organization When on one talks with the exiles the refugees from the Red terror one is appalled by their attitude I Recently I spoke at length with a former fonner foreign minister of one of ot the countries countries' now firmly in the jaws of ot the Soviets He assured me that today if there were a free election in his country not 1 per cent of ot the people would vote to support a Red regime He said these satellites are not satellites at all they are as much a part of the Soviet Union as the Ukraine or Outer Mongolia The I secret police pollee paralyzes all aU independent ent action i i There Is a desperation about the attitude of these men who fought the losing battle against the Kremlin They say there is absolutely no hope for Europe unless the Russians are driven back to their old borders and the Balkan states Poland and Finland are arc freed of Russian domination They say there is only one thing that will have effect effect ef ef- ef- ef feet A threat by the United States to use force When the quotation of ot the London official which I mentioned stating that the United States and Britain were committed to measures short of war var came over the wires I was reminded of the conversation with the former foreign minister He had said to me If It the United States threatens to use force now now the Russians will pull pullout out of ot Eastern Europe They cannot afford war now They fear tear the United States But in a few years mere threats will not suffice The Russians then will be ready to fight And this force moving against the political and economic religion of all sensible men is moving not only in Europe All AM along Russia's periphery periphery periphery pe pe- pe- pe the red tide is rising against its frontiers in the Middle East in India whose gates Russia has threatened for centuries in China Korea in the islands adjacent adja cent to Japan |
