Show CITIZENS DISCUSS WATER QUESTION pursuant to a call by the mayor and city council ot of brigham city between and citizens assembled at the tabernacle last evening to discuss matters pertaining to the cites culinary water supply and to hear the reports and investigations made by experts prior to final action taken in this matter by the city council mayor N C simonsen Sl called the meeting to order at and stated its purpose in referring to the reports circulated in form the mayor stated that these reports hid had been furnished by experts tor for the special benefit of the citizens he had appreciated their help in this matter and also the generous assistance rendered brigham city by salt lake city the state stata board of health and others mayor simonsen Sl stated that the cast iron pipe tor for laying the pipeline has been delivered and the money to carry on the work has been arranged tor for the mayor then guined the meeting over to those assembled suggesting attorney wm J lowe act as chairman mr air lowe stated that while we may differ in our opinions of the various springs we are here here for s securing e c u ri n g information that we may se select 1 e c t the h e best possible water tor for culinary purposes J E ryan was named secretary of the meeting L L daynes state bacteriologist william petersen state geologist A S bedell sanitary engineer of the state board of health and H K F burton superintendent of the salt lako lake waterworks water works were in attendance at the tha meeting these gentlemen answered many important questions concerning the available water from which this city may secure its cullu ary supply namely the hailing and maple springs at mantua the information contained cantal ned in the pamphlets circulated by the mayor and city council was verified by the visiting experts which in effect went to show that ii file h i e halling hailing spring was wag a deeper seated boated spring than the maple spring and tor for many reasons reason more pure and less liable to contamination dr daynes stated that he had been requested by the state board of health to make a examination ot of the water from the springs at mantua he stated that scientists agree that the principal diseases spread through water are typhoid para ty dysentery and asiatic cholera that the finding of bacillus coll call in water is evidence that there is present in the water supply some of the intestinal contents of at either animal or human li uman also that these discharges are comparatively recent mr air petersen stated that the proposition up tor for consideration is unusually serious and that he be had only a human interest in it he discussed I 1 j the sources irom from which the waters of each spring came and stated that the hailing spring being of deeper origin was filtered to a greater extent and was thus more pure he stated stated that ithe the lime content in in either spring was enot not injurious to the human system also that the maple spring water or a part of it most likely came from the sink hole valley on this point james knudson took issue with mr air petersen mr air bedell instated that maple spring is at times contaminated as shown from tests of the water while the halling spring aprim is not contaminated the matter Is up to the citizens of brigham cit city Y mr burton stated that he had been asked to make estimates of 0 costs of laying cast iron pipe from both springs and in answer to many questions stated that the pipe could be laid and made absolutely sate safe and iree free from seepage from either spring it was evident that many who were present at the meeting favored the maple spring in preference to the I 1 halling hailing spring and that the people are arc somewhat divided as to a matter maiter choice at the conclusion of the meeting after the points at issue sad t ad ban been discussed from all angles mr air wm win jeppson introduced a motion botio n in effect that the matter of choice between the two springs be voted on by the people at the coming election by a separate ballot in ai order it r aliat that the opinion of tile the majority of the e citizens it I 1 zens may bo be ascertained certa ined the coign motion carried and the aitt citizens zens will wili have hav e a chance to ia say aay by their ballots which cpr ant they prefer os s a source of a M cites culena culinary ry supply |
