Show LESSONS LEARNED FROM RIB PEACH N inspection while the number of first grade peaches shipped from utah this year will total somewhat less than was expected at the beginning 0 of the season it is the opinion ot of the state and federal officers who have had charge of the inspection work that substantial progress has been made by way of establishing a high place tor for utah peaches in the better markets ot of the united states rigid enforcement 0 of the inspection rules has bas resulted in a quantity reduction ot of no 1 I grade fruit ault and forced a number of growers to market their product as no 2 grade but growers generally are greatly pleased with the manner in which the inspection work has been conducted and they feel eel that it has pointed the way to permanent improve went ment in the peach crop ot of this state only in a few instances have shippers taken issue with the inspectors even though entire carloads in some cases have had to be turned back and repacked for the most part growers have willingly met the inspection regulations gu lations and displayed a pronounced reluctance to ship from utah anything but bui the best grade ot of peaches among the various causes named tor for the failure ot of some peaches to grade no 1 are faulty production methods failure to spray or improper spraying damage by the twig borer injury by branch rubs hall grasshoppers and the katydid in some instances production methods influenced perhaps by climatic conditions rendered the ruit fruit a little undersized under sized tor for grade no I 1 but it seems that blemishes resulting from direct injury y to the fruit were largely responsible tor for many 0 of the peaches having to be graded as no 2 most of this kind ol of injury can be avoided according to io H J webb state agricultural inspector and it Is likely that growers will exercise ii a great deal more caution in their future production methods as a i result of what they have learned this year really the first in which rigid inspection has been conducted the grading and packing pacing demonstrations conducted through the offices ot of the various county agents in the peach growing sections are said to have had a very noticeable effect on the growers many of them bringing their fruit to the cars graded and packed according to united states standards and thereby having them accepted by the inspectors without question As more growers familiarize famil arize themselves with the grades and what is required with by the inspectors it seems certain that an increasing percentage of utah peaches will leave the state as grade no band 1 and will enter the markets of this country to command top prices the results secured this year in the minds of all who have been consulted with reference to the matter are sufficient to justify the belief that utah peach growing Is being placed upon a commercial basis which so tar far as outside markets are concerned has never before been approached in this state moreover it is believed that what has been accomplished with peaches this year probably will be accomplished with other crops as the inspection work Is extended several of the local fruit and vegetable associations have united on distinctive tive labels for their box shipments which add materially to the attractiveness of the containers and at the same time serve to focus the attention of consumers on the producing section on all these labels the state is emphasized pha sized that is the peaches are utah peaches or the apples are utah apples but the name and address of the local association are also given utah farmer 0 |
