Show The History o of Mining in Utah y j F s sY Y I 4 2 Are with Metals Extracted finds its resting place on slag dump once its surged up from far beneath the surface to provide Utah re re- re sources EDITORS EDITOR'S NOTE This Is the second of or of eight articles on the history of the metal mining industry In Utah With the end of the water period the record tells of the beginnings of the Rocky Mountain l uplift of the formation of the Great Basin and how it its rock formations were being squeezed and faulted and contorted between the Wasatch on the east and the Sierra Nevada on the west of how the fissures and cracks Were vere formed to allow the penetration of metal bearing solutions solutions solutions and of how in places laces the surface surface surface sur sur- face of the earth failed ailed and the themo mo m. en wen material underneath surged up causing rhyolite flows and porphyry and some of which as in Bingham Dingham carried carried carried car car- ried enough mineral to become valuable valuable val val- as ore Much of Utah litera liter- liter a ay y rose out of the water to share here resources with mankind And then came the ice ages As the ice of the last one melted away there was formed in Utah a n great reat fresh water lake Jake known as Lake Bonneville and in Nevada another another another an an- other one that has been called Lake Lahontan The markings of Lake Bonneville can easily be seen on the flanks of various mountain ranges From these benches its configuration n is easily determined But Dut it has passed into geological history The great Sierra Nevada mountains formed forme a barrier for the warm moisture moisture-ladden den winds of the Pacific causing them to drop their moisture before they could pass So this area areal hemmed in by bythe bythe bythe the and tits the Wasatch on the east and the Sierras on the west was deprived of its normal amount of rainfall and the region became more or less Jess arid On the floor of old Lake Bonneville Donneville re reside reside reside re- re side 90 per cent of the people of Utah and 75 per cent of its ir irrigable irrigable ir- ir land is there Then came man first the savage and then the civilized man The Pioneers who arrived under the leadership of Brigham Young July 24 1847 as as as-a a result of religious persecution moved from Nauvoo in the State of Illinois and began the colonization of the territory They turned the water from the mountains to the soil soB and thus developed developed de do modern irrigation The early comers adopted a policy of making themselves self supporting as to foodstuffs raiment and hous hous- ing The third article article- in this series will appear in these columna columns columns col col- col- col soon |
