Show MANY MINERS ENTOMBED. Workings Filled With Deadly Gas Fo. lowing Terrific Explosion, the Men Being Caught In Trap. Trinidad, Colo. Flfty-ono minors were entombed In tho Starkvlllo mine, eight miles from here, the results re-sults of an explosion which occurred about 10:30 o'clock Saturday night. Tho- explosion practically destroyed the old slope of tho mine, and tho now slope Is so thoroughly filled with gas and black damp that entrance of rescue res-cue parties by this route was Impossible. Impos-sible. It is feared that none of the men will bo rescued alive. Tho Starkvl lo mine has not been working a night shift until recently, when tho demand for Its output became be-came so heavy that tho day shift could not meet It. Then a night shift, which usually consisted of about 100 men, was put to work. Whllo practically all tho miners working In tho Starkvlllo mine aro of foreign birth, many liavo been In this countvy for twenty to twenty-five years, and a largo portion of them have been working fii the Starkvlllo mine over since it began operations In 1892. Tho mlno Is the property of tho Santa Fo railroad, but Is operated by tho Colorado Fuel & Iron company. |
