Show BOY PROBLEM DISCUSSED AT OGDEN MEETING rc regional onal scout executive C J carlson P resident president samuel G dye juvenile judge L J holther of ogden and A C carson of brigham city were the he speakers at a get to gether meeting held at the weber club in ogden friday evening scout executive G A boutes presided there were ninety four seated at the tables in the spacious dining room at the weber club thirty four of whom were from box elder county representing the boy scouts of this section of the state the purpose of the meeting was to meet and get acquainted quain ted with the scout officers in the newly created district with ogden as headquarters these men were there to demonstrate their interest in putting t over scout work in this new district and box elder was there one hundred percent strong the first speaker of the evening was president samuel C G dye of ogden he called attention to the need of close cooperation in meeting the boy problems of today what will it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul we might interpret this to read what will it profit a man to gain the whole world anif and lose his own son said the speaker and added all we live for is our children he then related a circumstance that happened in france A french soldier served in the army and after being wounded he was sent home for a time upon arrival there he learned that in his absence his son had disobeyed his mother and had gone when the mother told him of what happened he said my god what have I 1 been fighting for and now my own son has gone president dye said 1 I conic come to you tonight and appeal to you to consider the boy problems of today for today is the tomorrow that au you worried about yesterday we need men who have courage and manhood the only way to get strong characters to handle the world problems of the future is to develop manhood he said and then read a poem entitled building for others executive carlson said this was a one hundred percent meeting and paid a high tribute to the men assembled in the interest of the boys such service and leadership cannot be purchased with money he said and then entered upon his subject builders of men he told of a certain wealthy man ulle had been successful in life and when hen asked what he considered the most important work he had accomplished complis hed the man said not the money I 1 have accumulated but the good work of seven young men whom he had assisted in getting started out right in the world orld all of whom were a success in the world both in character and in business affairs every young man is either an asset or a liability said tile the speaker and much of their in life depends on the men of today he said every third man in the army had to drop out because lie he was physically unfit for service to his country and co could uld not be considered as an asset he told a story of a youth in provo who had been given to spend in the e city after spending 75 cents he had 25 cents left for car fare to get ael back home while waiting for his car he noticed an old lady crying he thought of his duty as a boy scout and wanted to render some service to this woman and finally made inquiry if he could help be her he learned that someone should have met her at the station but were not there and she had no funds the lad asked a taxie driver ei what lie he would charge to take the old 0 id lady to her destination the driver said fifty cents the lad had but a quarter but he finally bersu persuaded abed the taxi man to go with him and take the old lady to her friends and then he started out on a six mile walk for home A man picked the boy up en route and finally extracted the story from him it proves conclusively what scouting is doing for the boys of the country A C pearson of brigham city paid a high tribu tribute te to the good work of scout commander alt alf freeman and was pleased to report that there i is s much enthusiasm in the boy scout work in box elder county that the people generally here were delighted with the new plan of organization for now the smaller communities will have an equal chance with the large cities in putting over the work and doing something effectual for the boys he suggested that all get in and work and then keep right on working |
