Show T FUNERAL SERVICES FOR THE LATE PRES VICTOR E MADSEN F funeral services in the tabernacle on wednesday for the late president victor E madsen were the most largely attended services held since the death of president oleen N stohl the floral offerings were so generous that room could scarcely be found i for them on the casket and all of 0 the stands one very beautiful factor about this display was that the flowers with a very few exceptions came bronil from local flower gardens and were contributed tri buted by the people who had cared tor for them with their own hands the work of william C horsley in the design presented by the stake presidency and high council was worthy of special commendation and the skill of mr horsley was apparent in the 1 disposition on the stand of the contributions of flowers long before the the hour set tor for the commencement of the services the house was packed except for the first twelve rows of benches which had been reserved tor for the family and the bishops and counselors and stake officers hundreds of people were turned away while every available space including standing room was occupied in the building the meeting was under the direction ot of president S norman leo who was assisted it president joseph josep it N stohl and bishop 11 IV valentine the first song was wa by the choir and anti led 1 I know that my aly redeemer lives a song that has been sung in hundreds of 0 funeral services by brother madsen tile the opening prayer was offered ered by patriarch edwin 11 cordon of willard the second song was was by the echo male chorus charus and entitled perfect prayer the first speaker was dishop david P burt who has been identified with church work in the brigham third ward where brother madsen resided covering a period ot of perhaps thirty years all during which time he had been assisted in many departments ot of work by the deceased he bore a fine tribute to the trustworthiness and to the value of 0 the services lie he so willingly rendered the second speaker was wm win C Il horsley who related sonic some very touching incidents in fit ills his experience with brother madsen paying a tender tribute to his cheering personality and loving ministrations to those tho ie alio were in fit need of fuch such servie service at iongi stake clerk S N lee a life long associate spoke of 0 the work that brother madsen had bad lone done in the ward and the stake as a member of the choir and later as leader and of the unselfishness that lie he had shown in the cause that lie he professed ii president joseph N stohl told of ills his lot long acquaintance with the deceased and band of the friendship that had exi existed between them for many years past and particularly during tile the past five tears years when they had been associated in the presidency of the stake he spoke of the shock of receiving news I 1 that drother brother madsen had passed away band and ot or his eagerness to reach that victor E madsen w was as one of her pupils she sang the song very beautifully attaching to its rendition the lovo love and respect that her association with him in singing had entend red governor and recited a poem giving a vivid and exalted conception ot of tile the importance of 0 the creation of man soren a companion 0 of president madsen in tile the scandinavian mission and now a member ot of the presidency of 0 the jordan stake bore a loving tribute to ills his missionary corn com panion calling attention to the facility with which acquaintance developed into friendship and ot of the excellent work in fit spreading the gospel that was per performed formed by the deceased in the land 0 his fathers bishop lorenzo N stohl who presided over the third ward tor for a number ot of years spoke ot of the excellent support given him by brother madsen and as illustrating his loyalty to the au cause se of 0 the church mentioned the spirit in which he responded to an invitation vi to have part in a fund turned over to the trustee ln in trust to be used in the purchasing of the temple site or adjoining grounds in jackson jackso n county ile he spoke of the love and affection that had existed between them and of 0 the splendidly rounded out character ot of the deceased elder joseph fielding smith ot of the quorum of the twelve came as a representative ot of the first presidency and delivered a very illuminating sermon upon the subject ot of life here and hereafter he lie reatter reading treely freely from the scriptures in it support of 0 the hope that the gospel gives of 0 the lire life atter after this and the duties and blessings in store tor for the fai faithful and the god tearing fearing the echo male chorus chortis sang the song praying for you a song which the children dien and the mother ot of the deceased 11 particularly and urged the people to profit by thi the record that he had made as a servant of the people in fit this community promising the bereaved happy recollections and much satisfaction in the good name that had been bequeathed beque thed to them president S norman leo lee said that ile he found it very difficult in the face of what appeared to him to be such a great loss to collect ills his faculties and order his thoughts to pay a tribute that would satisfy his own soul president madsen had been such a source pt strength such a refuge in time of 0 trouble and had furnished sunshine in such abundance when sunshine was needed that the loss now seemed irreparable however lie he was thankful that lie he had had the association of such a choice soul and his desire was to profit by the experience and thereby be fitted when tile the time came to rejoin the deceased and take up again what had been one of tile the happiest associations ot of his life he asked tile the people to try to put into their lives the lessons they had learned from president madson madsea and not let his unselfish and untiring service in fit their behalf be in any wise in vain he thanked those who had so kindly taken from his shoulders the burden ot of funeral arrangements range rai ige ments would otherwise have fallen to hit him it services at the graveside were were very beautiful the floral designs being banked baked upon the burial lot alongside the grave the prayer in dedication of the grave was offered by dr A W ensign a we
