ed to the zion mount carmel highway tunnel governors conference ar TIB most unusual 11 dence day observance held in the united states occurred when governors of seventeen states met within the famous zion mount blount carmel highway tunnel in southern utah to participate in its formal dedication to public use although it Is 13 only 20 miles long this highway Is the greatest project of its kind ever undertaken by the U S national park service and bureau of public roads its cost coat was close to two million dollars and it incorporates two tunnels one feet long and the other more than feet long in its ita short length dedication ceremonies were held within the longest of the tha tunnels whose outer wall Is pierced with six galleries through which yenti ventilation ti and sunlight are admitted gallery 1 the largest of them all was the scene of the formal dedication within this gallery galiera the stand from which various gover national park service and union pacific officers and other representatives senta sent tives attres of the U S government and the state of utah made their address was erected marvelous Marve loua prevail at this point in the tunnel and there was ample room for the two thousand spectators all of whom could hear bear every word spoken by the speakers even when hn an ordinary conversational tone of voice was used patriotic music wao waa supplied tor last official trip of inspection spec tion lon of the work on the tunnel with E H 8 superintendent of zion and bryce canyon national parks presiding president heber J grant gave an invocation in which he be asked the divine blessing upon the undertaking he praised the cooperation of the parks parka service and the states of utah and arizona without whose help ike he said the task would have been impossible many engineering difficulties were encountered in building too the road read and tunnel through the mountain range which is feet high involving scaling precipitous cliffs on ropes and ladders so close was tho the calculation on the tunnel which la Is feet long and 22 by 16 15 feet in size that they varied only by luches when the bores met from two directions declaring the work of the tha engineers bad only to place the road where nature had bad intended it should be built millions of years ago maedonald balled jt it as an the symbol of a bigger idea of the cooperation and faith that Is taking possession of the people of the united states governor dern in the same view said the people of utah do not mot need or want wani national parks parka within their borders as playgrounds for local people alone but are proud to share these natural marvels marvela with people of other states the audience included hundreds or of people of southern utah who bad assembled within the portal of the tunnel to join with the governors parly la in dedication of the road and observance nc e of independence day they found the tunnel portal and gallery gaily decked with flags and bunting and chairs placed for their comfort within a rock hewn ampi theatre work on the highway has been in progress for the past three years and its construction embodied some unusual and an remarkable engineering feats its ita purpose is to shorten the distance between three national parks barks zion where the highway begins and grand canyon and bryce itryce canyon national parks to the south and northeast respectively beginning near the park ranger station nt at the entrance to zion national park the road ascends in a long series of oc gently rising switchbacks switch backs until it reaches the sheer shear face of one ona of the cr crimson cliffs of zion national park here the longer of the two tunnels begins and penetrates this cliff for a distance of more than a mile the road finally emerges at the top ot of the plateau from which zion canyon has been etched eons bons of time by one small river it accomplishes its purpose of shortening the distances between the three most colorful of all of the tha twenty two national parks in ahe ha united states gov cov dern dem dedicates zion li mount carmel highway governor GO dern in his andregs nt at the dedication ceremonies stressed some of oc the beauties of utah scenery it Is peculiarly appropriate that this great highway should bo be dedicated to the use of the people of the united states on our count rys birthday it is also fitting that this cere mony should be held in th the e p presence re sence of the governors gover aora of so many of sister bister states their presence here Is Ucal of the interest of all the states in this project it la in as it the people of the whole nation were here this morning to see this marvelous undertaking placed at their service there may bs be differences of opinion among the western states in regard recard to the national policy of reserving their land and mine minerals rais from private entry but there is nidiffer no difference of opinion among them to la regard recard to the national parks these areas of outstanding beauty beruty are chiefly valuable tor for their recreational al uses A ve do not need thelnor th them emnor nor want them as ag playgrounds for or our own people alone we are happy that they have been set aside for the enjoyment of all who may be at by their charm they are the show places of our nation in which every american holds a share of ownership while zion national park rind and bryce canyon happen to be situated within thlu the boundaries of the state of utah yet we are proud to share our ownership of these natural marvels arvela ro with all the rest of our fellow americans and we say to them como come out and in speck your property you will be proud of it and your pride of ownership will make you a better more patr folle american in the best sense alon national park has sometimes been referred to as yosemite done in oil I 1 trust you have all experienced the sense of hush and awe and mystery that cornea comes over one as he be looks up at the great white throne thrond or gazes from the temple of Sina wawa over toward angels landing with its gloomy gorge by sheer red and white cliffs feet high oil on either side it is no wonder the me indiana regarded it as a spirit land to be entered only with fear an and d veneration when you come to bryce canyon national park you will find an entrancing fairyland with wit hits its spires towers and minarets mina of the most exquisite hues bues so delicately carved by nature mature that stone atone resembles lace statues monuments enis cathedrals the eye can pick them out their beauty lingers long in the memory as a masterpiece of fhe ha giver of all good and perfect gifts draye 00 60 miles through the incomparable kalbak forest the largest tract of virgin timber in the united states wing herds of deer as you pass along proceed to bright angel point or cape royal on the colorado aad imalle it the majesty of that sublime spectacle daei does not impress you you
