Show COLLEGE AT CEDAR OPENS SEPTEMBER 9 seven hundred copies of the 1929 30 catalog ot of the branch agricultural college of utah have been mailed to prospective students according to a statement mado made today by director henry I 1 mr arrived in cedar city last week to assume his duties as acting director of the branch college in ill the absence of director J howard maughan who la is spend spending ing the year in graduate work at the university ot of wisconsin early party of the summer mr air was engaged in teaching at the utah state agricultural college summer school for the past two years lie he has occupied the position of head of the department of education at that institution according to director the new catalog announces changes in the curriculum which in ili addition to offering a greater variety of subject matter from which prospective students may select their courses unities unifies the work of the branch college more closely with that of tho the mother institution at logan among these changes lie he calls attention particularly to the offerings in vocational work in agriculture the branch agricultural college says saya mr Is now prepared to offer the first two of ark work in the fields of forestry and range management and of smith hughes vocational work in agriculture students who years of work prescribed in these fields at the branch agricultural college will be accredited without further preparation for admission to u upper P division work in the utah state agricultural college at logan this Is a great advantage particularly to the young men of southern utah in that it enables them without leaving this part of at the state to begin preparation pa ration for two fields of work in which there Is at present a great demand for competent leaders speaking of the opportunities tor for vocational leadership in the state of utah and surrounding territory at the present time mr who as head of the placement bureau at the state agricultural college tor for several years was in close touch with the demands tor for college graduates la in the various fields says there Is a growing demand all through this territory for trained workers in smith hughes work forestry service and range management at the agricultural college this demand hits has tor for some years been actually greater than the number of trained workers we have been able to put into the fields it is a mistake for college students to assume that outside of the professions fes there Is no work open to the college graduate except that ot at teaching the regular academic subjects the newer vocational fields are brov ing their usefulness and popularity and they otter offer practically unlimited opportunities to young mentho men who meet the special qualifications demanded for or these fields mr also calls antte I 1 tion to the fact that for the first ti time me in several years the college Is offering courses in art this work Is under the direction of miss mary L bastow formerly head of the art dopart department part ment at brigham young college logan since the discontinuance of that institution in 1925 miss bastow has done advanced work in california and has been art supervisor in schools of miami arizona and lecturer on modern decorative art tor for the utah state department of education she Is considered by educational leaders to be one ot of tho the most competent art instructors tors in the sta state teof of utah before september 9 director plans to visit the greater part of the towns of southern utah for the purpose of meeting the patrons and prospective students of the school the college he says Is making preparations pa rations for a heavy enrollment particularly ticul arly in the college division |
