plateau the eastern and higher part has in later years come to be ba known as the boulder top an apt descriptive p name this particular area I 1 Is about 70 square miles in extent having a mean elevation of about feet and a maximum elevation of feet at bluebell knoll it la Is of volcanic origin the rim on oil the south east and north sides consisting of basalt cliffs and ledges several hundred feet high in many places the top proper Is quite flat and broken up tip by many pot holes and sinks many of them forming lakes no live streams originate on oil the top but many large streams break out at or near the foot of the cliffs forming the rim boulder creek Is tho the lar largest gestl and in less than a quarter of a mile enough water Is collected ito form 1 what is often called a river most of this water comes from a single I 1 enormous spring crystal clear and extraordinarily cold the top la Is covered with a dense stand of spruce with scattered grassy parks enormous losses of I 1 timber have occurred by beetle infestations I 1 tat ions large areas not having a single live mature tree now this promises to form a serious obstacle to grazing in another five or ten years by which time most 0 of the dead timber will be down the danger from tire fire will not be as great as might mighty I 1 be expected partly because of frei quent summer rains and the fact that dead spruce does not burn readily some 2300 0 head or of sheep graze on this top herders gerders who have hava spent many summers bummers here are exceedingly cee about traveling at night or in fit the frequent denso densa foga which close over it liko a blanket during the day the striking simi j larity of the entire top TOD and dense timber make it a fine place in which to get lost one herder says the timber on oil ills his allotment Is so thick he cant find his 1119 knife in his own pocket 1 from the east end 0 of browns point pointe there Is an entrancing view ot of degrees of the horizon from
