Show THREE MILLS at ROAD TAX impossible A in the campaign being waged to secure additional hard surfaced road construction in various parts of 0 this county it a number of very important facts have either been overlooked entirely or else so grossly misrepresented as to make them appear in an entirely different light in order to get strai straight glit just what box elder county ca can n do with respect to levying additional taxes tor for road building purposes the news consulted the statutes and the county records with he following result box elder county can levy a maximum of 0 3 mills for or state road purposes and a maximum of i 3 miles tor for county road purposes this includes building new roads and maintenance at the present time a levy of 0 1 mills has been made for or state road purposes and a levy of 0 1 mill tor for county road purposes leaving a mill and a halt half to be levied tor for state roads and two mills for county roads that Is as tar far as the law will permit the county commissioners to go additional LEYY LEVY MADE recently at a meeting ot of the state road commission at which were present the county commissioners from this county together with the mayor and a number of gentlemen from this city it was declared that the present contract between hot springs and brigham city could not be completed this year unless the county would increase its levy by a mill mil I 1 and a halt which would supply sufficient funds to complete the job this was made necessary because the state road commission found it impracticable to dispose of any more road bonds for the simple reason that too big a premium was demanded by the purchasers and rather than submit to such a loss the commission stated it would suspend road building activities with what funds the commission has however and the additional 11 mill tax proposed to be levied by the county com ers the hot springs brigham contract could be completed this year and disposed of according to the statement of many of the gentlemen present at that meeting commissioner A R capener enthusiastically urged the levy of the additional mill and a halt half and after some little discussion commissioners sweeten and wright agreed to the proposition that disposed of all the tax money which the law will permit to be raised tor for state road purposes EASY TO understand the county road tax levy being one mill at the present time can call only be increased two mills and the gentlemen who have been shouting so loudly for an additional 3 mill levy evi evidently denty have overlooked the fact that it cant be done there is another alternative however and that is to increase the levy to the maximum tor for both state stale and county roads and use what is necessary to complete the new projects asked for at tile the sacrifice of the hot springs brigham city contract a project which the state road commission without consulting the county commissioners and a project which the commissioners have agreed to see through by levying an ail additional mill and a halt which brings the state road levy ui aik to the maximum permitted by law commissioner capener surely burely must by boully fully cognizant ot of these facts and he must further be cognizant ot of the tact fact that the state road maintenance Is already overdrawn and not a dollar to carry on the maintenance throughout the coming summer PASSING THE BUCK in the light ot of these things why the evident attempt to camouflage the real situation and why pass the he buck to commissioners wright and sweeten with the inference that they are both anxious to see the state road changed to go north along the mountain side because those gentlemen state that they will not agree to the additional tax levy for the simple reason that the law will not permit it but are ara willing to su submit alt a load bond to the ess the gentlemen who have become conversant with the attitude ot of the state stale road commission aver that had no dissension arisen among our own selves over these road projects the hot springs brigham city job would have been completed and the watery lane would have been hard surfaced to the turn pike and thus the state hard surfaced surta ced highway would have been pointed out tow toward 1 rd t the he valley in good shape with bright prospects ot of being added upon next year and the next until it reached to tile the idaho line because of what has already taken place it is almost a certainty that neither the watery lane nor the garland tre mouton monton project will be built this year THAT HARMONY MEETING the vote taken at the meeting of the representatives of 0 the various commercial clubs ot of the county held in als city last tuesday evening svening is reported to have been unanimously in favor of the levying ot of three mill tax the report ought rather to have hav e stated that there were no opposing votes to the proposition sentiment was tor for from being unanimously in favor jor tor a great many gentlemen gentlemen present refu seato express themselves the meeting v vas as called tor for the purpose of 0 gen aratin g harmony it if possible and t these hese gentlemen did aid not feel eel at liberty to interpose their objections and and thus start a row so they kept still aspersions per have been cast at commissioner wright for remaining away from that meeting the commissioner missioner declares that he was invited by inference to absent himself in the interest of 0 harmon yand had he been present lie he would undoubtedly have told the meeting exactly what he told tile the gentlemen who met the following lowing tol day that he was opposed to the three mile levy because it cannot be done this same view Is held by commissioner e r sweeten and the only way offered to secure the funds desired to construct the roads mentioned therefore is to get the taxpayers of the county to authorize auh orize a bond issue WE HARMONY the notion that brigham city or any other community is opposed to garland and tremonton Tre monton getting a liard surfaced highway is pure rot DrIg brigham harn city Is justas just as anxious to be connected up with the valley on a hard surfaced road as any other community in the valley can be and it Is generally felt and so admitted at one time by commissioner capener that to get the highway down to the turnpike at the bottom of the watery lane would be a big step toward connecting up tip the vall vally valley y with the county seat and the mait 42 alt a highway aal had been nu af blk yle there the slightest question of a 1 doubt but that the work would now be under way |
