Im lifes is a branch of the utah agricultural college located at logan like tho the mother institution it exists for a twofold two fold purpose to off to the youth of the land an aca do domac training and to carry on an extension service in the way of delving into the problems of rural utah atto attempting empting mp ting to solve salvo them location I 1 and purpose make it necessary for the school to have a rural point of view recognizing the part pait played by rual america in the building of the nation 1 and appreciating the purpose of retaining in ili rural burat life that strong and virile blood which has been the seed bed of american leadership the dream brearn of tho the school is to train and assist the people to succeed and bo be contented in an their home lands to this end and purpose tho the school offers fers in the various departments depart menta of instruction training in agriculture english and llitera literature ture home economics business and social science education and psychology mee mechanic banic arts music basic arts and science and physical education in order that tho the departments depart menta of instruction might bo be moro more efficient as well as to make moro more effective the extension service large amounts of money have been spent in building av tho the college laboratories and experimental plants under the direction of tho the department of agriculture a farm is operated upon which are arc main maintained tabled select dairy dalry cows both holstein and jersey breeds a small flock of blooded somo some blooded 10 oded duroc lersey jersey hogs and a flock if 0 of white leghorn chickens these animals are supported by tile collego college farm which produces alfalfa grains ani and co corn rn ensilage in connection with tile tho farm tho the college has succeeded in fit demonstrating that water may bo be arld from a pump well in ce cedar da r valley ley the well la Is tho the result of years of experience on tho the part of the col logo yours years replete with criticism land i and adversity tho the experts of the institution realized that cedar valley wust have water to produce and ahat hat it was the e duty of the e ollege college as a state institution to prove that water could pr or could not be had the well was driven originally in 1910 at this time a small flow W was as obtained A few years later the piping was perforated but without result in 1925 another attempt was made to produce water and this time with the air of a byron jackson pump a flow of a second foot was as produced by persistent efforts tho the college proved that underground water could be I 1 had in cedar valley though now it is carrying on experiments to deter 0 mino mine means and methods of the most successful farming in that region this well pu pumping raping water from more than two hundred feet below tile the surface is adequate to irrigate approximately hundred acres 0 of f land ond to insure tho the crop in connection with the farm a creamery is operated which produces butter cheese and tee ice cream while itis it is expected to pay its way the plant is ia not maintained for commercial reasons I 1 31 it is ig primarily a laboratory where the agricultural problems of southern utah are met and studied pd students who receive academic training in the feeding breeding and care of farm animals in the producing of agricultural crops and manufacturing dairy products and the tha marketing of the same find tho the plant an excellent laboratory where tho the practical side can bo be seen the homo home economics training III like e sewing and to cook by cooking under the direction of exports experts in conned the agricultural Is given in a practical tle 11 way girs aro are taught to sow sew by tion with tho the domestic science kitchen la Is a dining room where dinners and banquets aro are served by tile tho girls in the mechanic arts de department ment apartment anart woodwork shops forges and an automobile n garage offers to the student practical experience while tho the practical side aide is ia ampha i sized tho the cultural is not neglected A library of considerable strength with delightful reading rooms roomi and study corners la Is maintained using the library as a laboratory various courses of academic nature oro are offered ono one of tho the chief strengths of tho the institution is its music department hero here students are given training tig in both tho the vocal and instrumental side once a year under tho the auspices of tho the department an opera is produced last year tho the opera cast with on ono exception exclusively from the student body was presented in nearly a score of towns in fit southern utah A symphony orchestra is trained each year as well as a band and danco dance orchestra scholarship I 1 is and always will be the fundamental principle of the tha institution ution and care is ia taken to not only have the credits meet standard requirements but to instill the th spirit of scholarship into the students the faculty are active in advancing their own scholarship two or three each year are given leaves to study at higher institutions of learning the result is that a well trained corps of teachers young vigorous and ath a scholarly attitude comprise the teaching staff the enrollment of the college in the academic year 1926 27 wai students about equally divided between junior college senior high school over school ake age and the iron county high school students ro four ur years ago t tho he school graduated its first junior college class today the junior college is the important division and is ia assuming more and more importance all the time students assemble at the branch agricultural college for their collegiate work chiefly from the counties of iron washington beaver plute garfield and kane one of tho the most impressive things about tile tho branch agricultural college is its campus which though small is one of southern beauty spots it has been well planned with the five buildings on a mound at the west and lawns flowers shrubs and many kinds of trees in front of them the administration building is ia in the center e of the row with the mechanic arts building and garage on one side the library and gymnasium on the other tho the gymnasium is now under construction to be completed early in ili the fall the addition of the new gymnasium gives the college adequate housing facilities for the present tile the branch agricultural college is young it was founded in 1898 as a 8 normal school a branch of the university of utah in 1913 it was changed to an agricultural college and made a branch of tho the state agricultural college in order that it might better servo serve southern utah its early development was not too rapid so t that hat by 1920 1020 the college division was of no importance by 1922 the college enrollment was only ton ten students in 1923 the first junior college class was graduated in 1927 this s spring pring the graduating class numbered d sixteen and over a hundred students wore were enrolled in fit the college division the recent activity in the extension work the development of the campus the increased enrollment of students indicate how firmly rooted is the branch agricultural college in the life of the section that it serves southern utah tho the major industries of this section the topography po of the country and climatic conditions are such that over 80 00 per cent of the area is not adapted to cultivated agriculture the greatest value from such lands comes from the native vegi tation that is transformed into meat and nd wool by herds that graze over thes theio 0 arid and and semiarid ranges some idea of the importance of live stock to this section can be obtained from the following figures of shipments through cedar city car loads of sheep i car loads of cattle 82 car loads of wool and mohair receipts from these shipments for the past year are arc estimated as follows sheep and lambs lum bs wool and mohair cattle total there are a number of other shipping points aside from cedar city in this section where considerable quantities of live stock and wool are shipped namely iron springs lund and modena these figures however refer only to shipments from the cedar city station southern utah U t a h is particularly adapted to sheep husbandry the arld arid climate and high altitude in connection with nutritious forage produced under these arid conditions all contribute to the growth and development of rambouillet
