Show POLICY ADOPTED TO COMBAT FLU yesterday Yeat erday afternoon a meeting was held in the commercial club rooms tor for the purpose of 0 adopting measures tor for combating the present visitation ot of influenza which has now become practically epidemic the meeting was called by the board ot of health and was attended by all the doctors who could be present a great many ot of the business men and representatives ot of the church organizations at the outset dr pearse declared it to be his candid belief that nothing is gained by closing up everything and he justified his attitude by the experiences perien ces of 0 a year yea r ago he stated dut but he strongly urged that a st strict rice quarantine be maintained in every family where the disease existed even to the well members and also advocated the retraining refraining from gathering together in crowds by the people the doctor stated that the board ot of health was anxious to do its best to cope with the situation but was willing to be guided by we the opinion ot of the citizens as to the hest best means of carrying on the battle he frankly stated that the medical fraternity knows very little about the flu and the doctors are almost as much at sea as to what course to pursue as g anyone anyone and everyone else are the one definite fact known however is that the patient has no business in trying 0 jo o fight off the malady but should go immediately to bed and stay there as long as he or she does not feel normal in health when the matter was thrown open for discussion a motion was made expressing confidence in the board of 0 health and backing up the actions ot of that body an amendment was made to the motion setting forth the sentiment of the meeting as being opposed to closing up public places and business the discussion which followed evidenced the tact fact that the feeling was overwhelmingly opposed to placing a jan ban on public gatherings and practically unanimous that a rigid quarantine should be maintained finally the motion as amended was passed with the additional leeway giving he board ot of health the right to close the lid tight at any time the board felt that such a course was necessary the matter of 0 the flu isolation hospital came in for discussion and dr fister suggested that the local hospitals combine and make one an operating hospital exclusively and the other a flu hospital exclusively the ward amusement halls and tithing office were proffered also but the suggestion ot of dr fister was looked upon as the proper solution of this problem and steps were taken by mayor mavor peters and the board of 0 health to bring about the conversion ot of the brigham hospital into an influenza isolations iso latios hospital dr pearse declared that fitly fifty new cases of influenza had developed during the last twenty tour four hours and lie frankly predicted that the community would be alive with the pestilence by the end ot of the present week unless everyone cooperated to check its spread supt bupt reported that a daily dai V check on health conditions in every class room is being made by the teachers and children found to be afflicted with coughs and colds are promptly bent home nurses are needed right now one family being reported as being in bed every member with no one to wait upon them it was also decided to have tour four special health officers appointed to assist inspector john al burt one from each ward to be on the job every twenty tour four hours of 0 the day during the last tew few days mr air burt has run his legs off in hi ansi answering vering calls in all parts of 0 the city he now has a number ot 0 families to whom he has to carry provisions at regular periods and it is a physical impossibility tor for him to manage all the work alone in the matter of 0 the quarantine the doctors are all agreed that the people themselves must cooperate in this matter religiously or dire results may happen any family where there is the slightest sickness develops that does not report the matter promptly is jeopardizing not only their own lives but the lives ot of their neighbors and everyone else faithful reporting of sick cases and a religious observance of quarantine regulations are regarded as indispensable in com batting this recurrence ot of the epidemic and in as much as no one knows when he may tie ie exposed and put to bed by the flu it should concern every individual to observe these two regulations to the very letter caution is again expressed over becoming hysterical nothing is gained by being alarmed to the point where the individual gets frightened to death of the disease it is all right to be alarmed to the point where we are willing to cooperate to rid the community as quickly as possible of tie the n alady but in the mean time one must use every precaution to bate guard his health and above all things retrain from deliberately becoming exposed by running into the disease |
