chief farming and stock raising city of the county it was established by mormon mormon pioneers sent there by president brigham young as early as 1860 1850 owing to the hostility of the indians these settlers were to leave but re turned in 1851 and remained PC permanently rma the climate is tempered by the ficat great salt lake on the north an and Is 10 degrees cooler in the summer and 10 degrees warmer in the winter than any place in the north or central part of the state farm products of hay bay grain P sugar beets onions fruits and many others are produced in commercial quantities sugar beet tonnage of 30 tons to the acre can be produced in any ny favorable year water for irrigation is obtained from north and south willow creeks and supplemented by artesian wells in the eastern and d northern parts of the city lar large e herds of cattle and sheep are owned here and ranged in the mountains to the west and north excellent pasturage for dairy cattle is obtained on the lowlands between grantsville Grants ville and the shore shoie of great salt lake the further development of the agricultural ri area of grantsville Grants ville is pendent upon water from utah lake as that available at present is used to the utmost and no more land can bo be brought under irrigation from the present sources of fully acres of land that will produce any crop that can bo be raised in a temperate climate lies in the vicinity of grants villo ville awaiting the united states decision as to its reclamation by water from utah lake grantsville Grants ville is divided into two cc wards of eighty four miles west of grantsville Grants ville on the victory highway ls is tw site of a large plant built for the extraction of potash salt and other products from the water lying just under the surface of the great american desert this vast eap exp expanse anse of land contains untold wealth in the form of magnesium chloride and other chemicals in addition to the salt and potash magnesium chloride is being used in the manufacture of a metal claimed to be stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum the utah salduro company has an immense tract of patented land located on and adjoining the salt beds these beds of salt from three to twelve feet deep are about five miles wide and thirteen miles in length wendover on the utah nevada line is a freight division point of the western pacific railway and the population is composed mostly of railway employees plo it is also the junction point of the gold hill railway and the western pacific i ibapah section better known as the deep creek valley is situated in the vivid in the memories of men seventy or eighty years old the alvarado and kane springs were the two mines which produced the ore in those earla early days and in recent years very em eminent nent engineers from large cities of the united states I 1 have pronounced these old mines worthy of further development the western copper mine is one of the largest in this section in recent years its main product being high grade rade sulphide arsenic many tons gave havo been mined and shipped for insecticide sect icide products and it has been the chief support of the gold hill section the united states smelting smelling Sm elting and refining company have also contributed a largo tonnage tonnage to the arsenic trade I 1 within the last ast three years they the particularly adapted to stock raising ng a and n farming arming the agricultural portion is from two to four miles wide ands and about twenty miles long its water supply is obtained from the ibapah mountains one of the highest ranges in utah the highest peak being about foet feet there are about acres of pastures and farming lands the chief crops being hay grain and potatoes the climate is invigorating as the nights are always cool and during the hunting and fishing season many come f from rom the large cities to hunt deer and grouse and fish for trout in the clear streams the ibapah mountains form the east cast side of the valley and taper to the northward through the clifton gold hill and dutch mountain ranges the mining activities of the section center in and about gold hill the chief town of the western part of tooele thoele county and the terminus of the deep creek railway from wendover 45 miles away avay gold hill was named from the thel gold extracting smelter which was built there in very early days authentic information is not available at this writing but blit old settlers claim that many thousand tons of gold ore went through the smelter yearly and left in its wake a path of prosperity which is still their mine is also equipped with modern machinery and commodious buildings with the exception of the P palmer al gold mine the main developments lead to tho the belief that gold hill is destined to become a lead silver camp the palmer mine however is a continual shipper of high grade gold ore and other properties fes adjacent and surrounding the palmer gold mine are being developed with the belief that there is als also 0 gold bearing veins of high values value on th these ese properties south of gold hill six or eight miles is the clifton mining district which is rich in silver and lead ores the most promising properties and th those ose that are being worked and developed dove deve ve ope d are the oregon undine the F federal dera the copper copler queen the monaca and the cyclone at th cyclone new modern machinery has bas been installed to expedite the extraction and shipment shili ment of ore ore has been shipped from this property since the first of this year to the north of gold hill is dutch mountain standing out in bold relief 80 00 feet bet high with a geological formation that indicates that there are within those
