Show war waged on bark beetles within grond canyon park ogden og den utah the stands ol of yellowy yellow pine on the grand canyon national park and the adjoining kaibab national forest are threatened with destruction truc tion says district forester R H rutledge of the united states forest service at ogden utah the national park service of the de department P artmont of the interior and tn ane e forest service of the department part ment of agriculture have been cooperating to fight this infestation following a survey by agents of the bereau 0 of entomology and acting under dundei the advice of that bureau in the work of control last year bear a total of infested trees were felled and peeled at a cost of per tree this checked the infestation but the work must be continued before it is fully controlled plans for the coming season involve the treatment of about trees located in eight centers of infestation of which five are in the kaibab antl forest involved an estimate expense of and three are in the national park requiring 2 for their treatment the secretary of the interior has joined with the secretary of agriculture in asking for tolover to cover the cost of the work this season under the cordial cooperation between the two departments the work on both the park and the forest will be handled by the same crew of about 40 men thus reducing overhead expenses and permitting more beetles beetle to b be killed with th the e same money than would otherwise be the case it is confidently believed by forest experts that the valuable timber on both the park a and nd the forest con can be saved if funds are made available ai lable for the work |
