Show aen 01 WAR salt lake city utah june 6 1918 to all local district medical advisory boards and all utah newspapers i the provost marshall general authorizes the following ONE YEAR OF WAR one year ago occurred the first registration I 1 gi for milli tary purposes of the young manhood ot of the nation ten million men responded in a single day this accomplishment was nothing short of marvelous marve louB the task of classification of 0 this great mass of 0 men power la in such a way as to permit of 0 its organization and into an effective army was entrusted to local boards and district boards constituting a force of 0 nearly leading citizens of 0 every community who assisted in their work by more than equally patriotic volunteers have performed nned a work that challenges the iho attention and excites the admiration of all our people well may we pause today while another million of our youths enter the lists and survey the results of years work each registrant has been examined and his availability for military service has been determined in other oilier words these millions of men have been classified in such a manner that the nation may now call tor for them to come forward into the army no call can be so large that it will not be filled immediately whether the number be such as may be filled by those who have been found in the first rank of available or so BO great that men standing in tile the second d third or fourth ranks of availability must go forward in other words all those millions of men who one year ago were an inert mass have become a mobile army each has found his place and each in ills his proper turn has marched or awaits the order to march these results could not have b been een accomplished except through the de voted doted and unselfish labor of patriots the local and district boards have scored an unprecedented triumph and have earned tile the undying gratitude of 0 the nation their achievements is one of the great successes of the war they have bave already sent into camp include ing ng those under orders for june mobilization an army of more than a million ion and a halt half men they have already produced as soldiers one man ot of every six registrants and the world stands in proud astonishment as it views this accomplishment statistically stated the local boards have sent and are sending their registrants to ter camp in the following numbers september general october general november general december general total tortal to jan 1 1318 1918 january specialists 2024 general er al total rebr february uary general specialists total march general specialists 10 total april general school specialists total A u R may general school specialists total total furnished to june 1 1918 june general school 25 0 specialists total 2 2 5 4 grand total 1505 08 campens Com pens 1 d poorly if at all except by the gratitude gralli ute and affection of their neighbors and of the nation at large the boards have labored incessantly through the ener enervating enervation vatin heat of last summer only to find a still greater task awaiting their unceasing devotion throng throughout bout the rigors of the following winter then having accomplished complis hed the classification they found themselves confronted with the mobilization of millions of men and accurately and promptly they have performed and are performing this labor much work yet remains today the new men ot of twenty one are being registered and must be speedily classified on the first of next men month th the local and district boards will be invested with the still further responsibility of preventing idleness arid and of unproductive employment which is not effective to the nation in the emergency some boards will ivill review their work arid and correct those inequalities which have been unavoidable in so tremendous an undertaking the nation however with full confidence in the men who have performed these great tasks in the past faces the future without foreboding the splendid work of our local and district boards and of the other great volunteer army of assistants has filled us with admiration they have been tried and found true and so long as this war w may last our people are happy in trie the complete assurance that this great organization will not tail fail the nation SIMON BAMBERGER governor |
