Show sugar factory completes successful campaign today marks tile the end of 0 the beet beat grinding camp campaign algil at the brigham sugar factory it will require several days of operation to complete boiling doin the syrup that is still in process ot of sugar making and then the power will be turned off the boilers will be permitted to cool down and the actie work of turning another crop of sugar beets into the finished product will have been accomplished shed the year has been a very successful one latie according to the statement tnt at supt bupt F W hunter not art an accident ot of any serious nature has happened during the season neither in the repair work during last summer nor during the sugar campaign now drawing to a close there have been no mechanical al troubles to arrest the progress ot of manufacturing sugar and there have been cm an labor disagreements to har bar artiss ithe management E everything very thing has combined to make the season a most pleasant one along that line and in computing the profits and losses there is no reason for complaint over the net results just what has been accomplished was interestingly told to a news reporter by supt bupt hunter himself as he sat in his cozy office on the second floor of the factory on wednesday morning the information was gathered by the question route and these are some ot of the statements presented during the campaign the brigham factory has sliced tons of sects beets tons were raised on the farms in the factory district and are tabulated abu on the companas comp anys books as local beets 1963 19 tons ot of beets were shipped to this factory from weber county bearing mute evidence of the tact fact that the local factory can accommodate a much larger local acreage that is at present supplying it these beets have been sliced at the average rate of tons per day of 24 hours and the total sugar manufactured reaches the staggering amount of pounds required to contain it contrary to the oft repeated statement that the long dry tall fall increased the sugar content in the beets the test showed a decreased sugar content had the beets been sliced as fast as they were dug the first statement would have been verified but because of the short season the beets were g green reen when dug and then they were piled because neither the sugar company nor the farmers wanted a repetition orf of the experience of the year previous after the beets were piled the warm weather continued and the beets heated in the piles many were rotted while all were shrunken so that both in sugar content and poundage the beets fell short between the time of weighing out of the farmers fields and when they were delivered at the factory for grinding dut but despite these conditions the sugar company feels very well satisfied with the activity of the brigham factory for the tons of beets raised in the brigham factory district the farmers were paid at the rate of per ton which amounts to which was distributed among the farmers on the east side of dear bear river between honeyville and hot springs tor for the beet crop alone in order to handle the work during the campaign mr air hunter employed IGO aco men of whom worked during the day and 53 during the night shift the regular monthly payroll amounted to tor for the three months during which the campaign lasted As soon as all the syrup has been transformed into sugar all the men except about 30 will be laid off of and those who are not retained eta ined to be regularly employed during the summer in ing and repairing tile the factory will be given preference over other men in all contract work wark that may be needed this force of men are practically all home boys when the campaign began it was hard to get local help and mr hunter was compelled to depend upon transient labor to some extent As the farmers completed the harvest of their beets they appeared at the sugar factory and asked for employ ment and as fast as they could bo be accommodated commo dated they were put on the payroll the entire working force was new at the beginning ot of the season except a few men and the remarkable success which has attended the seasons run Is a striking festl mony many ot of the efficient work which has been done and which means that the local boys have mastered the art ot af sugar making to a very remarkable degree local men are arc now naw employed as foremen foremen and sugar boilers the most responsible positions in the plant ive men and one lady are employed in the office to keep the records the sugar company hits has not been slow to appreciate the service of its working force tor for it has increased the salaries throughout one third and given an additional bonus of 10 per cent of the wages to cacti man the regular salaries range from per day to loeper month the matter of fuel to furnish the steam tor for the brigham factory is no small item tons of slack coal have been burned during the season arid and the management has had no little trouble in preventing much of this coal from being consumed by internal combustion the slack has been unloaded from the cars into great heaps about tile the yard and the peculiar climatic conditions soon developed heat in the piles necessitating a shifting shit ting of the coal to another spot in order that the burning slack in me lae center of the pile might be extinguished extinguish el and the entire pile cooled off that was done a number of times with each pile and to overcome the trouble a massive cement coal silo will be constructed ted near the boiler room in the spring which will contain at least tons of coal gy by providing this cement cement silo the slack will not heat and thus save the company a great deal of expense and annoyance other than this coal silo the sugar company Is not contemplating any additional improvements at the factory during the coming summer the reg ular renovation and repairs will occupy the attention ot of the superintendent and his working force the summed suimei months during the first six weeks of the campaign tie manufactured sug sugar arwas was ship shipped wy avry practically as fast as IV was miia mavs but since that time tim every very little sugar lias has been sold in consequence of which the big storeroom Is bulging with the sacked sweet stuff it is a sight to behold and the sugar in storage represents a fortune the company is shipping lc out now only upon the requisition or permission ort the food administrator and at th the a prices which the government has fixed filed so there can be no speculation nor cornering ot of the market in as much as one fourth of the beets go out into the silo in the form ot of pulp there has been a tremendous tonnage of stock feed manufactured by the local factory the pulp this year has cured in perfect condition but because of the long period of open weather and the mild winter stock men are not feeding nearly so much pulp wis tuis year as they did last the big silos are practically filled right now and there is enough pulp to feed hundreds of head of stock through the balance of the winter the big mill was set in motion on october 1917 and now that it has completed its long steady grind the human part of the machinery is heaving a big sigh or of thanksgiving to properly commemorate the occasion the local force will join the force farce of the ogden factory in a big time at the berthana dancing hall at ogden on the evening of february bin ath A commatee from the brigham factory met with a committee from the ogden factory an and arranged the details of the social the expense of which is being bourne by the workmen of both fact factories arles that the brigham sugar factory Is onest the greatest blessings that has yet come to the east side of bear river must be apparent to all ahn read the record of its achievements luring during the past season beason |
