habits ot of its people after spending one day in salt lake city and even after spending an hour at the depot in ogden while their train was waiting to proceed on its way east or cr west the result ot of such historical sketches has been mostly a bonglo conglomeration ot of un truths designed to mislead the reader and cast art an unfavorable light upon this state and her people and so the writer ot of this article wishes it to be understood at the outset that the caption ot of this article must not be taken literally for it would be an utter impossibility for one to see box elder county in tour four days or four weeks and get a through understanding der ot of its resources conditions and problems this article Is just intended to take the reader on a most delightful automobile trip 0 of tour four days duration through tile the far western part of this wonderful county leaving brigham city early thursday morning comfortably bundled into tho the big owned and driven by chairman lewis S pond of the war saving thrift stamp committee that gentleman mayor alador john IV peters R 11 wright and the writer started tor for snowville Snow ville commissioned by the county central committee of the liberty loan to preach patriotism to tile the people and solicit their support to the third liberty loan I 1 the nippy north breezes was uncomfortable until the road turned at blind springs from which point on the riding was most delightful at the outset it ought to be stated that the roads over the entire distance I 1 with the exception of 0 a short stretch this side of lucin lucia are splendid and 1 an average running time of thirty I 1 miles per hour was easy to maintain A meeting was scheduled tor for snow ville aurs day evening and as the party arrived early in the day all attended the funeral services over the remains of the late laie mrs torbin J barb insen and then spent the afternoon interviewing tile the people of the town and talking liberty bonds and war saving stamps with the result that a number ot of subscriptions were secured for the meeting the ward chapel was packed and the remarks made by the speakers were listened to with the closest attention some musical numbers were interspersed by way of enlivening the otherwise serious proceedings ce and at the close a splendid response was given in the subscription to liberty bonds the local committee also received renewed determination mi nation to go after the work and the flying campaign committee felt that its efforts had been more than repaid by the splendid and substantial reception given it ly by the good people of snowville Snow ville while at the metropolis ot of western box elder county the party was entertained at the hospitable home of president and mrs J C cutler cutic and alio those echo who have ever had the pleasure ot of such an experience can ap ate what a delight it was to spend a night with those good peonia dennir president cutler was to become a member of the party from fijn on and so sith five healthy men three wedged in the back seat and two comfortably nestled in the brunt the nose of the big car was piol eted toward grouse cheek early fridal morning and the party i rolled oiled out of 0 snowville Snow ville at the rate of thirty five miter miler per hour the great overland trail across curlew valley was followed only to the showell ranch where the party turned olt off to the left in order to include kelton on the way vay to park valley tho the good roads were a veritable dream to ride over and brother pond still remembers the days when he used to outrun everybody in gentile valley and never permitted any of his fellow ranchers to drive better nor taster faster horses wan he the sensation of speeding in a big car set his sporting blood tingling and lie he was frequently frequez ily constrained to stop step on er just to see how fast she could go in the mean time the three in the back seat were guht as frequently forced to lock their fet and arms together and with the tree free hands grip the sides of the car to escape being catapulted through space every time a little bump in the road was encountered it might casually be stated that the speed limits of every corn com were ruthlessly transgressed tho the whole trip was made more pleasurable by the constant repartee which flowed back and forth between the occupation of the front and back seats A short stop was made at kelton to make the citizens of that locality acquainted quain ted with the mission of the party and the people were found to be loyal to the government and the third liberty loan because of the fact that a rousing meeting had been held at both park valley and rosette on sunday the 14 it was not considered advisable to stop I 1 at those points only long enough to interview merchant C W goodliffe and leave him some campaign literature and merchant billiter Bill lter who was also given a batch ot of literature each gentleman reported that the sale of liberty bonds and war savings stamps N was as going along very satisfactorily and each is doing his bit in campaigning for these N worthy orthy causes taking on a good supply ot of crackers and good strong cheese the party left park valley shortly after 3 and headed tor for grouse creek via lucin lucia the overland trail thru that valley is like a nard pavement and excellent time was made until the old S P railroad track was crossed there is a considerable stretch of a road thru the flat country there and deep ruts bear mute testimony to the result of the heavy traffic trade last summer after a storm a road drag hitched to the back of an alit automobile m would work wonders in repairing the road and would add much to the reputation of this county in tile the way of preventing the unfavorable bitic which must naturally be expressed by the transcontinental trans continental auto tourists who pass that way it would be a mighty good thing to section that great highway off and employ road supervisors to tee bee to it that the surface of the road is always kept smooth and hard and all chuck holes filled in empty beer and whiskey bottles all along both sides of the road tor for a number of miles this side of lucin bore route mute testimony that the nevada line was not far off A real live and fearless deputy sheriff in that part of 0 the county bould have the time of his life g gathering in the illicit traffickers in booze and would more than likely be able to stop the business altogether lucin lucia suddenly appeared from nowhere as the big car mounted a little knoll and the place looked like a veritable oasis iu in the desert while brother pond was taking on oil a new supply ot of gas oil and water the balance of 0 the baity mingled with the few inhabit taints of the railroad junction and talked government investments it was learned that the people have given their support to these movements and were enthusiastic for the success of tho the present campaign the drive from rom lucia buciu up to grouse creek a distance of something between twenty and thirty miles was like riding in the teeth of 0 a buzz saw so biting cold was tile the wind none of the party had ever been out in that section before so the landscape offered opportunity tor for interesting study previous notions of 0 the lay of 0 the land 1 were completely upset and it was a real satisfaction when the houses and barns ol of the community appeared in the far distance our old friend and former member of ct the board of 0 education charles kimber has the work of obtaining subscriptions to the liberty loan in charge at been appraised of 0 the coming coining ot of the flying campaign committee lie ho was on cm the lookout for us and was the first man encountered at the post office he rm immediately mediately assigned us our places tor for the night Aless rs wright glit peters and madsen going to the hospitable home of mr air and mrs mra A P F cuchens lU chens president cutler going to the llorme home of mr air kimber and brother pond was taken in tow by mr air J IV cooko cooke after a good supper a rousing meeting was held in tho the basement of 0 the beautiful new ward chapel the people of 0 grouse creek have recently erected this splendid house was a revelation to the visiting party far or it was equipped with lavatories electric lights class rooms and an amusement hall in the basement the water is piped into the place from a spring up in the hills and the electric lights are generated in the engine room of the basement by a gasoline engine which drives the dynamo tho the house Is constructed of 0 continued on page 2 SEEING BOX ELDER COUNTY IN FOUR DAYS continued from first 1 insl page gray sandstone which abounds in that country and chich is blasted out of the ledges and then hewed into square blocks for suitable building stone the meeting was a most enthusiastic one and attended by over one hundred people pond peters and cutler did the preaching and wright and madsen did the singing sin gine at the close of the meeting the benches were cleared away and dancing g was indulged in by the young people and a good many of the grey haired veterans too while the visitors were busy making out applications and enlightening individuals who wanted more information relative to the aar at funds grouse creek is awake and do ing her patriotic duty in these matters as well as for the red cross the community has furnished soldiers and the the people feel the pressing need of 0 standing behind the government in every particular the visit of the party recalled the times when grouse creek was a part ot of the box elder stake and the church authorities made a practice ot of going in a regular cavalcade once a year to visit the people there many of the pleasant experiences of those bygone bygone days were recounted by tile the old inhabitants whose memories were nere refreshed I by hearing tile the names of 0 the youngsters ot at the party tor for their fathers father were usually in the party on these church outings the weather was bitter cold friday night ice freezing to a think ness of nearly an inch and vegetation has scarcely started to sprout the elevation of that community is something over 1200 feet higher than tha 0 of brigham city so it was little wonder that tho the air was so cold the on the mountains surrounding the little littile valley added materially to tho the influences fluen ces at work to make the temperature so low and every wrap that had been taken along was brought into use early saturday morning as the party started out for junction yost and standrod St andrad because of the bl snow drifts on top ot of the divide which separates grouse creek from junction valley it was impossible to cross over and make the trip in two or three hours hour s so the party was forced to drive to oakley idalia idaho forty seven miles out of the way aud and then come back to junction valley making a trip of something over eighty miles to get about |
