Show ABE MAJORS PAROLE yesterday the state board of pardons granted eranier a parole to abraham R majors who was sentenced in the district dietrict court at logan to life imprisonment ament tor far the murder ot of captain W A crown brown of the ogden police force after his capture majors was incarcerated in the county jail in this city for over a year and after his con friction ric tion he was transferred to the state penitentiary for a number of years majors mo ino ther lias has toiled tailed to get him paroled and atty J W mckinney lias has worked unceasingly cea singly for the past three years souring affidavits from tho the jurors who convicted majors as well as gathering new evidence to assist in freeing ills his client once before the board of pardons refused to lo grant an application for parole but yesterday additional evidence was presented and the application was granted majors has already spent halt half his lifetime in jail the slaying of capt apt W A brown of the ogden police force which occurred april 30 1899 1800 near tile the hot springs just out ot of ogden followed a robbery of fred hansen just south of this city april that evening archie majors who was then about twenty two years of age and his brother abraham R majors who was then 18 years of age held up and robbed hanset hansen who had some milk which they took they also took from hausen other belongings tied him and passed on their way hansen released himself and informed the officers of what had happened sheriff cordon bordon of box elder county deputy sheriff thompson and countable G J wells started in pursuit of f the holdups whom they found near the hot springs the brothers refused to halt and the officers opened fire the two highwaymen returned the ae fl re fled to the ill hills ils and disappeared sheriff layne hofweber of weber county and his deputies joseph beinar joseph bailey and captain brown were summoned and arrived at the scene about daylight the next morning the deputies divided into groups and started in pursuit of the fugitives on april 30 about 2 in the afternoon sheriff cordon deputy belnap and captain drown brown encountered the majors alie moun lioun bains they were cama commanded to halt hajt and refused the officers opened fire and the boys returned it archie majors was shot and killed in the fight and immediately after he tell fell captain drown brown received a fatal wound abraham majors was supposed to have fired the shot which killed captain brown although he contended later that it was his brother who wounded the police captain just a moment before archie himself was short phot and killed 1 following his conviction ot of first degree murder majors was sentenced to be shot july 7 1830 1899 lie he appealed and the judgment ot of the lower court was affirmed execution day was then set for august 17 1900 majors again asked tor for a new trial but the motion was denied lie he then appealed tv ta the supreme court from that order the supreme court ordered that the order of the lower court denying majors motion be set aside and the case be remanded to court below to vacate the judgment and grant a new trial at tho the second trial majors was convicted of murder in ili the second degree the jury recommending mercy but the court sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment from this judgment he be appealed the appeal was heard during the tall fall term of the supreme court in 1903 and judgment was affirmed december 15 the same bame year 0 |
