Show I -iTIEEIN'G UP SrfilFE. Satrr . ar morninu we were very much iarprir ji to read the letter of Mr. U. J. Then just why Mr. Ulfliiifi. a: vii chocse this p.rtic-alar p.rtic-alar j uncurb wish its delicate sur rouiuirjgs. to nrg.3 objections to the political coura? of theIIerald and its conductors, we cennbt very well Eea. But kavicg dore so we equally fail to se just why the Herald 6hould accord it the importance which it jdoes. This Ill-timed equabble might, with propriety, pro-priety, go over until a more convenient sason, say until the enemy had been met and beaten. Then we could have formed a ring ard Mr. D. and the editor edi-tor of the Herald could have strirped and fought it out in comfort and all would have enjoyed the "mill" more or less, save perhaps the combatants themselves. As it is, we fear they en joy it and they alone, save the common io9.the republican party. Mr. Dininny certainly states some troublesome facts, but to what purpose? pur-pose? Is there now occasion for them? If they are all true and undisputed will their publication just now tend to cament the warring elements of the pirty? Is the Herald's, reply likely to ameliorate the bitterness or soften the asperities? We fear not. The Herald Indicated daring the discussion of suffrage suf-frage in the convention, that it had a chip on its shoulder ana it would like to stand face to face with the man having hav-ing courage enough to knock it off. The fact is it seemed to court a row, democrats preferred. In this matter with Mr. Dininny its evident relish for the scrap is apparent to all, and it ! gives palpable evidence to substantiate his charge that it knows and cares far more about church matters than democracy. de-mocracy. We have heard it charged many times during and since the late campaign cam-paign that church influence was used in favor of Mr, Cannon. But we cannot can-not accept the statement. But the charge has been made and one devoted de-voted democrat, who ia a Mormon, remarked to ub Saturday, that now was as good a time us any in which to definitely settle the mooted question. ques-tion. If the charge is true, said he. the sooner the church receives a competent com-petent rebuke the better it will be; if not true, the sooner the charge is die-proven die-proven and the church relieved from it, why the better that will also be. Some of Mr, Dininny's statements and figures seem difficult to dieprove; certainly cer-tainly the Herald has not answerad them. We do not wond:r at that because be-cause the paper is mad, veiy mad. It is in a rage and a racing nim is not usually long on logic. The Herald's bad temper and abuse of the author of the letter does not answer i;s charges. Permit Per-mit Mr. Dininny to haya his way when he claims that the party is without with-out an organ. What harm will that do? Tae H9rald'a whole course in this matter is more like what one would expect fron a half-grown, not mora thin half-grown, child and badly trained at that than a calm reasoning mia intent upon guarding his party from making a mistake, rather than defending his church from an unjust charge. Let the church Uke care of itself, but let the leadin? democratic piper of Utali look well to it, thit if Mr. UininDy or any one else is injur ing the party that he or tbey be met witn caim aigmty, fair argument and indisputable facts and not with utter puerility, ae in this case. What bua-ineas bua-ineas is it of the Herald's ho.v Ion? Mr. D. has been in the territory? It has only to do with the arguments he presents, pre-sents, and nothing wtiitever with the length of time he tiai consunsd in gathering them or bis manner in presenting pre-senting them. If Mr. D. has made an ass of himself, as the Herald seems to think he has, let him bray himself out of the di lemma, but the Herald can with great propriety abandoa in querulo is humors, cease Us scoldings aud recall the fact that It is not, in person, responsible re-sponsible for more than half of the mistakes and blunders mide by others, nor yet for their unfaitLfulness, either as democrats or citizens. |
