Show Territorial Democratic Platform Adopted at the State Convention. Tne democratic party of Utah in convention assembled, reposing its trust in the intelligence, patriotism and justice of the people standing upon the constitution as a foundation itud limitation of the powers of the gov-eruuitut gov-eruuitut as eli as ui guaranty of the liberties of the citizen congratulate the territory now soon to be a state on the assured success of the policy adubiei by the national organization as laid djwn in all its plattorms. For the democracy ot the entire territory ter-ritory we reaffirm our f ath in the permanence per-manence of lederal union aud.our ievution to the constitution and the laws; and declare as catdinal doctrines of democracy: First Absolute acqmescence in the will of the majority as a vital principle of the democratic party. Second Total separation of church and state for the sake alike of civil and religious hbt-rty. Tnird The liberty of the individual uuvexed by sumptuary laws. Fourth support by the etate o? the public schools. Fifth Tbe supremacy of the ciyil oyer the military power. t,ixlh Exact equality of all peraonB belore the law. Seventh The right to a free ballot the right preservative of all other rights, Eigbth That our democratic party is the friend of the laboring man f in every avocation of life, and will protect pro-tect hL interest alike againt the ag grtssions of monopoly as well aa the commune. We believe the restoration of the money of the constitution is now toe paramount issue before the country, and insist that both parties shall plainly state their respectiye posi ions upon the question in order that the voters may intelligently express their preference. We therelore declare our-6elve our-6elve in favor of the immediate restoration res-toration of the free and unlimited coinage of gold and silver at the pres ent legal ratio of 16 to 1, as such coinage coin-age existed prior to 1873, without wait ing for the aid or consent of any other nation. Gold and silver coin to be a full and legal tender for all debts public pub-lic and private. VVs denounce the republican party for the demonetization of silver in 1873 and for its repeated acts of hostility toward to-ward its remonetization. We call attention to the fact that the country was in the throes of a financial panic when the democratic administration adminis-tration assumed central in 1893, and we congratulate the people upon the approaching ap-proaching reign of prosperity as a result re-sult of a democratic reform of the tariff; tar-iff; and also to the tact that factories, foundarie8 and mills have returned work since the repeal of the McKinley law, and to the constantly advancing wages of workingmen in almost every industry. We again express our hearty appreciation appre-ciation of the democratic congress and president in providing an enabling act by virtue of which Utah is about to assume as-sume its position as a sovereign state. We commend the action of the democratic dem-ocratic members of the conetitutional convention in surround. nc the taxing and revenue-raising power of the state by euch restrictions and limitations as to preclude any squandering oi public properly m aid of private enterprises, and to confine the expenses of carrying on the public business within proper limits ol economy, despite the utmost unanimous opprsitiou of a republican majority. And we iayor the adoption of the proposed constitution. We congratulate the women of Utah upon their admission to equal political rights with men under the provisions of the constitution proposed, and the democratic party for the earnest and able support of that measure by its representatives in the constitutional convention. We denounce as false the charge thit the democratic party of Utah has been guilty or stuffing ba lt boxes or other election fraudss and condemn the republican party for its unwarranted un-warranted and libelous attack upon the majority of the Utah commission, and deplore the lack of principle shown by its attempt without any evidence and for partisan purposes to besmirch the character of honorable citizens. |
