Show STAKE CONFERENCE. Well Attended Good Advice Given-Elder Given-Elder J. E. Booth Answers He v. Apostles Brigham Yourg, John Henry Smith and Abraham II. Cannon, the stake presidency, and Dr. Carl G. Maeser were the speakers at the quarterly conference of the Utah stake held at Provo on Saturday and Sunday. Sun-day. Much valuable instruction was giyen the Latter-day Saints who attended at-tended the conference, and they were many. The increased attendance at this conference over that of previous conferences held in this city was a pleasing feature and was favorably commented upon. The main topics of the discourses were the proper care and training of the rising generation and the urging of the Baints to be careful in the oncoming oncom-ing political campaign and eschew all abuse of opponents and bitterness of feeling because of convictions on political politi-cal questions. A conscientious ex ercises of political rights according to individual political convictions was adyocated. BOOTH ANSWERS ANDREWS. The Fourth Ward meeting-house was packed to overflowing last evening with an audience in which was sprinkled many non-Mormons, the majority of course being Mormons. The announcement that Elder J. E. Booth would answer Rev. J. C. Andrews' pamphlet "False Prophecies of Joseph South" drew out the immense crowd. The pamphlet was taken ap para graph by paragraph. Many misquotations misquota-tions by the author were painted out, and bis interpretation of prophicies shown to be wrong. Joseph Smith's prophecy concerning the late rebellion, made in 1832, was handled at length and shown to have been fulfilled literally, liter-ally, not only in part, as Mr. Andrews claims. Mr. Andrews' claim that the priesthood of the Mormon church is built on a false foundation, the Aaronic priesthood coming from Ehas and the Melchesidic priesthood coming from Eliiab, Elias and Elijah being one and the eame person, was handled most forcibly. Nowhere in the Mormon I literature is it so asserted. On the contrary the Aaronic priesthooJ, according ac-cording to that authority, came direct from John the Baptist and the Melchesidic Mel-chesidic from the hands of the apostles, Peter James and John. Other parts of the pamphlet were handled as ably, but a fair report of the lecture would neceeaitate the writing writ-ing of a -treatise of several columns, which amount of space Thk Dispatch cannot devote to it now. |
