Correspondence Corres-pondence Dispatch The old 6etthrs of Spanish Fork look back with reluctance reluc-tance to what is known in our history as the "grasshopper war," while the children listen with iutereet to the recital re-cital of the various methods used to exterminate the enemy. Last summer the orthoptera pest became be-came so numerous that for this year many piedicted a repetition of "ye olden times. ' Our fatherly mayor who is ever awake to the interests of his loyal children, last week called a mass meeting for the purpose of determining the best way to proceed to rid ourselves of this crop destroyer. A goodly number num-ber responded and expressed their experiences ex-periences in dealing with the pest, and it was decided that the best way to proceed, is for each farmer to harrow his lucerne patches and barn the ditch banks so soon as the weather will permit. per-mit. The move meets with universal favor and all seem to be united in carrying out the project, many have already put the method in practice and are rewarded by turning outmillions of eggs to wither and decay in the sun. It is evident that now is the time for the surrounding settlements to jjin hand in hand with us, harrow their lucerne lands, stir up and burn their ditch banks and thereby save thousands thou-sands upon thousands of dollars in crops. Last week was a lively one as con-cerns con-cerns social affairs. The friends of Mrs. Mary Eaks planned a surprise UDOn her in honor of her hirthriav A large number met at the residence of Jesse P. Ilolt Jr. and spread a sumptuous sump-tuous feast, and when all was ready the lady was sent for but had suddenly become prostrated with chills and fever and could not attend. The companv therefore were the recipients of the surprise, but, however, the feast was done justice to and tne company enjoyed en-joyed themselves in the dance till the wee sma' hours bid them seek repose, and many were the expressions, I have not enjoyed myself better for twenty years." A goodly portion of the viands were carried to Mrs. Eaks and her heart was made glad, her only regret being that she could not participate in the enjoyment. The relatives of Mrs. Sarah N. Holt met at her residence, Wednesday, March 14th, to celebrate her fifty-ninth birthday. The inner man was more than satisfied, and the afternoon was spent in various games, as pitching horseshoes, playing ball and jumping the rope. All enjoyed themselves, and after refreshments were served, returned re-turned home wishing Sister Holt many happy returns. Mrs. John R. Wilson successfully plannted a surprise on her husband, Wednesday evening, March 14h. John was completely "knocked out" as the expression goes. The usual feast was spread and magically disappeared, after which dancing was indulged in interspersed with songs, recitations and "high five." John manifested his usual gayety as he passed the beer round, and urged the bashful to drink. "A most excellent time" was the general gen-eral verdict, Saturday evening oar choir assisted by the choir of Payson and Springville gave an excellent concert. With a few exceptions, the pieces were well selected se-lected and nicely rendered. Prof. Giles came in late and was ereeted with round after round of applause. His organ solo was grand and he was most heartly encored. Spanish Fork has some fine siDgers and her citizens know how to support them as was manifested man-ifested by the well filled house Saturday Satur-day evening. A little daughter of Prof. Rees has been quite sick for two weeks past, but is now slowly improving. Three Springville toughs came over last week and amused themselves by firing guns and frightening some of our lady inhabitants. They had the privilege privi-lege ot depositing six dollars and fifty cents each in our city treasury. Jasher, |
