Show Last week the editor of The Dis I'Atch made a brief all too brief visit to the charming, progressive go-ahead go-ahead little city, the metropolis of the Grand, Grand Junction, and was delighted, de-lighted, and aetouished as well, to note bo many substantial Bigns of improvement. improve-ment. One of the mont promieing indications indi-cations is the main improvement seen in the surrounding fruit-belts. Within the la6t six months, it is no ex aggeration to say, over one hun dred and Gfty men have bought and planted fruit farms. These consist of from ten to eighty acres. The effect is plainly observable. ob-servable. The present crop is deemed safe and it is by far the heaviest, and at this writtinz, the most promising ever grown on those far famed fruit lands. The widespread di saster to fruit in California and the northern states, promise the Grand valley men a big price. The Ogden Press would perhaps do well to remember that though the editoi of The Dispatcii, and about fifteen millions of other men, once made a huge mistake by going outside of the law to resent a grievous wrong done them by the government, that others shou-Id not do it. The bit of a lesson les-son we learned on that occasion has sickened ui with that plan of redressing either personal cr sectional wrong! of the government. The Press can always al-ways be eenteel, fair and impersonal in its treatment of graye national questions, if it will. Thk defection of Bryan of Nebraska and the editor of the Idaho Poet constitutes consti-tutes two blows of grinding fores f ull on the forefront of democracy. However, How-ever, the old party will endeavor to get on until a brace of political philosophers phil-osophers come along to supply the vacuum at the council board. The Herald manfully sets mayor Holbrook of this city right before the world. Indeed the Herald may sav with entire truth the Mayor's course all through the wealer excitement vcaa wise, patient and patriotic. He deserves praise, not blame. Two more silver senators in Washington Wash-ington will make the west feel good, and that circumstance will tell for the white metal when the forces of silver and the gold bugs lock horns on the final tilt. The Tribune isa little . bit sore, just a little, oyer its wonderful faux pas on the prospects of statehood the other day. Does this portend a change Of tactics for the coming campa!gn? The people of Utah county should keep the spray pump going night and day, until the last fruit destroying in sect in Utah county is numbered among the hosts who sleep only. The republican patriots are in a devil of a pickle anent statehood. That measure will render the democracy invincible in-vincible for this tall, but to fight statehood state-hood will destroy any party. The livest campaign which ever occurred oc-curred in Utah is looked for November next. The liegemen should be grinding their epears for the fray now. The Ogden Standard of May 20th announces an-nounces the suspension of the Sun of that city. We are sorry. Evidently the Tribune thinkB "special dispatches" are a competent set off, for brains. |
