Show A CLEANING UP WEEK. Such Will be the Present Week be in the Upper House of Congress. Washington, Feb. 18. The senate will make the week, as far as possible, a cleaning up week, so as to make way for the tariff debate, which will neces sarily prevent the consideration of less important subjects when it shall once be begun. The special order for the week Includes In-cludes consideration of the printing site, and the McGarranhan bills. Democratic members of the senate committee on finance have decided they will not be able to report the tariff bill to the full committee on Tuesday next. One member of the sub committee said today he would not attempt to say when the bill could be reported. "I shall be very well satisfied," he said, "if the bill is in shape to be reported by the beginning of next week." The reason for the postponement is the fact that the work of satisfying the democratic senators has been louud to be a yery difficult one. When the subcommittee sub-committee began work, they had before be-fore them a draft of the bill, upon which they believed it would be an easy matter to secure an agreement; but this bill has be in changed in some respects several times, and became so worn from handline and erasures, that it has become necessary to destroy the original copy and replace it with a new one. There is still much demand for concessions con-cessions on miner items and many of the most important features of the bill are entirely unacted upon. Sugar i3 still included in thi3 list and it looks as if its fate would be about the last question to be determined deter-mined by the sub-committee. |
