Show THK SCHOOLS AND THE BOUliTY The platform severely arraigns the republican party and legislature for its cruel cutting down of the appropriations appropria-tions for the support of the University Univer-sity Agricultural college etc and at the same time endeavoring to vote a bounty to the sugar mill Indeed this constitutes a policy for which even the republican party will find it difficult to offer a defense Here is the deliberate proposition to deny education to the poor on the score of poverty while we tax these same poor people to give a rich corporation a bounty of tvo cents I a pound on sugar It is not enough to eay that the bounty EO sought to be placed would encourage beet culture in the territory It has been demonstrated demon-strated that there is but little more if any profit in beet culture than there is i in potatoes wheat or any other of the usual farm productions in Utah We mention this matter only to show how the republican party is balanced If the uniyersity were run by a rich corporation cor-poration or syndicate it would have had no difficulty in securing an enlarged en-larged rather than a cut appropriation appropria-tion But being practically a state benefice to assist the youth of Utah in securing a university education it had no show with this name party of progress pro-gress 11 while a private company with a half million of dollars invested can have an unearned bcunty to an enormous enorm-ous extent simply for the asking It was well indeed that this territory had a governor with the requisite nerve to write a veto Here we have the Insane Asylum filled with the unfortunates The state benevolently cares for these people and makes effort to relieve the terrIble evil which has befallen them The interests in-terests and safety of these unfortunates are to be hazzarded in order that a lew men in the possession robust health all their faculties and who are in addition ad-dition able to put up a half million dollars upon a speculation may have two cents more per pound for their sugar than the commercial worth of the product amounts to This is a republican idea This Ie rspublican sense of justice This is i equal to the spending of many billions of money to free the ignorant negroes and In making citizens of them without any preparation to fit them for their new relations to society as well as refusing re-fusing them the necessary schools and the far more necessary means of living until they could look about and find friends elsewhere who would and could help At this juncture the people of Utah need their University and Agricultural Agri-cultural college far more than they will at any other period in their history his-tory and it is this moment that the republican re-publican party chooses to cut down mercilessly the mere pittance she can afford to contribute The great educational edu-cational enterprises of the territory are practically in their formative stages and amid the general business stagnation stagna-tion prevailing need aid more than they ever will again Yet this is the time chosen by this great and considerate consid-erate party to cripple them and contribute con-tribute lees than in any other season to the support so necessary to maintain a respectable footing By then deeds shall ye know them By this wanton and cruel act the people of Utah may easily determine that at least the republican re-publican party at home is no friend of the youth of Utah The national party never exhibited toleration mnch less friendship for the people of this territory and now it is developed that home republicans are no more to be relied re-lied upon for their kindly offices than the national party ia i or was eyer We commend these matters to the thoughtful consideration of the voters of the territory with the honest admonition admo-nition Trust them not for theee i among other reasons |
