Show One 'More of That Paper's Falsehoods Nailed. ME. HAYES IS EBG1SIEED Never WaB Eefused Permission to Reels-ter Reels-ter He Pelt That he Could Not Take the Oath of Residence, Having- Just Returned Re-turned From a. MisBinn. In its issue of the 3d, the Enquirer has the following unyarnished falsehood false-hood : Democrats have degenerated so far in their registration that they are now excluding the names of Mormon missionaries mis-sionaries from the list. The name of Will Hayes of Pleasant Grove, on a mission to the southern states, the register reg-ister held could not go on the constitutional consti-tutional list, because he had been away. The facts are tnese: Mr-Hayes read the registration oath and told Samuel Smith, the American Fork registrar, that he could not conscientiously swear to the residence portion of the oath. On Thursday last, Jon. Wooten told County Eeaistrar Emmett Lynch that .Smith had refused to register Hayes. Mr. Lynch immediately wrote Mr. Smith that it had been customary to carry missionaries' names from year to year on the registration lists and that Mr. Hayes could take the oath, or words to that effect, and Mr. Hayes is now ree-istered. ree-istered. Perhaps the Enquirer did not know the facts, and made its false statement unwittingly. The people will now very likely wait in vain for the Enquirer to make a manly retraction. |
