Show REPUBLICANS ARE AFRAID. First to Suggest a Debate Bet-ween Roberts Rob-erts and Allen ana First to Back Down. The republican committee has formally form-ally confessed that it is air? id to have C. E. Allen meet B. H. Roberts in joint debate. In reply to the challenge chal-lenge sent out by Chairman Powers in behalf of the democrats, Chairman Cannon writes as follows: SALT Lake City, Utah, Sept, 25,1895 Hon. O. W. Powers, chairman, democratic demo-cratic Btate committee: Dear Sib Youra 24th inst. just re ceived. 1 have already replied to the chairman of the populist or people's party, announcing that as published in the papers, the itinerary of Hon. C. E. Allen and his companions has been prepared for the entire campaign, and that notice of the time and place of meetings, has been forwarded to the people of the various cities and counties coun-ties throughout the entire territory, The people have expressed their satis faction with arrangements made, and it iB now too late to change the program pro-gram prepared. Shall submit the matter to our executive committee at its next meeting. Youra truly, o Geokgk 31. Cannon, Chairman Republican State Central Committee. It will be observed that this is a very farfetched excuse. It is known that the itinerary waB made for Allen and Wells until the end of the campaign tor fear that if they were not engaged straight through they might have no excuse for avoiding a joint debate. The trick was exposed by the Salt Lake Herald at the time. The baste of arrangements was seen through. Now the committee has taken advantage advant-age of the excuse to refuse a joint discussion, dis-cussion, for the executiva committee of the state central committee has approved ap-proved the answer of George M.
