Show JOSEPH F SMITH This gentleman in addressing the republican meeting in the 17th ward of Salt Lake on the 10th threw off the mask of moderation so long worn by him and comes out as a partisan the bitterest and most prejudiced that Utah has probably ever had acquaintance acquaint-ance with To this man statehood represented only a republican advantage advan-tage Had he not believed that Utah republican because she elected a republican legislature he would now have been fighting statehood as bitterly bitter-ly as did those other extreme republicans republi-cans in the east of whom Morae ol Massachusetts is a fair type Indeed must ones partisanship be bitter to lead him to that length This would be almost intolerable in a wicked republican of the world but in an exalted ex-alted churchman one intent in spreading spread-ing abroad the benign principles of religion re-ligion toleration and good will among men It seems grotesque According to this if the blessed Redeemer had beena democrat PresidentSmith would have rejected his gospel and been lost with his eyes open and all of his wits about him President Smith does not believe that we owe our present prospects for statehood state-hood either to Eawlins or the democratic demo-cratic party He is one of those logical ducks who credit the minority with wielding commanding power Says he if it had been in the power of the democrats to prevent the passage of the enabling act they would have done it This is the mere ravings of a man mad with the excess of his republicanism He is clean daft for surely no man with any degree of sanity could utter as monstrous an untruth as this If the democrats had been opposed to the passage of that act all they had to do was to vote against t They had majority enough even if statehood had been cjunted in anyhow by the rapublican minority Mr Olevelands veto if all dimncrats were opposed would hav been quite sufficient For shame Mr Smith why even the Ule boys over in Uintah are laughing you to scorn This cool man dwells at length on this subject bat the whole thing is the merest of mere twaddle and we do him I J too much honor when we notice the I I ravings at all He is paying the people of Utah but a sorry compliioent when he assumes J them to be ignorant enough to swallow all this The animus of this all ap pears when he makes the feeble effort to of pluck the wellearned laurel of state hoodirom the honored brow of Joseph Bawling How one must hate another an-other to enable him to go to such a length The president seeks to give Providence the credit of doing do-ing Utah this great service True but as Providence always works with human means iu matters of founding churches and states He chose Joseph Smith to plant the Mormon church i but he certainly appointed Joseph Rawlins when in his beneficeut pur poses He chose to make a ttate of the territory over Morses opposition We say to Mr Smith that if Utah exists as a state no longer than the republican re-publican party lives it were labor in vain to have created it Of all the nonsense in politics we have ever seen W8 Bay it truthfully and earnestly that this remarkable eorb of President bO Smiths takes the takary It is unique i I nor do we believe that its counterpart can be dug up out of all the annals cf allthe past |
