great republic of America and what is a republic The auswer to this may seem very easy and ought to be so yet how few take enough interest tu answer the question in its relation to an absolute or monarchical form of government gov-ernment In this short article we do not propose and have not space to enter into the subject in its many a varied forms of difference from absolutism but would endeavor to point out some of its many advantages over a government govern-ment as we know it in England and Germany A republican form of government should give to all its citizens the greatest great-est possible amount of religious and civil liberty Legislation should be such that the poorest member of the commonwealth should have guaranteed to him rights and justice equal to that j of the richest and most powerful citizen citi-zen zenCan Can we truthfully say that is th condition con-dition or things in America today As honest men ve must confess it is not so h for we see millions of our workingmen seeking work wihout success Men whose greatest ambition is to provide liberally for their wives and children but who have to become the recipients 1 of charity to keep the gaunt wolf hunger hun-ger from tLeir doors Is this resulting from a lack of wealth in our republic Certainly not for we see manufacturers and speculators becoming be-coming richer than ever individuals I became in the history of the world I Is it possible that such terrible mistakes I mis-takes are being made by our legislators that the toilers of this oir America 1 are being cast aside as though they had no part only as workers for tho rich and powerful of this republic If this be the fact is it not time to call a halt and inquire the reason for this condition condi-tion of things and endeavor to find a remedy I We have in America today two great dominating parties who are making j general laws and directing the course of the affairs of the nation one is the I democratic party the other called the republican Now which of these two parties can we look with hope of I relief from our present burdens and what can we take as practical illustrations i illustra-tions of what the principles of either 1 I has done in the past for the well being I 1L of humanity J If we turn to England we see it has U become the realest nation commercially commerci-ally on the globe but what of the rank 1 and file of the wage earner We see U men in the agricultural districts of that country working year in and year out for 300 or 12 shillings per week with no prospects for old age but the I poorhouse On the other hand we seethe see-the merchant princes building mansions man-sions amassing wealth to an extent neyer before seen in any age of the world Is the fault in the law or in the people Any one may answer as he chooses but tbe wage worker makes I none of the laws The rich make the laws and are such that any thinking man may justly call class legislation anJ there I believe lies tbe evil and if I not checked tle wage worker will become be-come as tbe pariah of India or the I I poorest Russian peasant Class legislation legis-lation in this couatry we call republicanism republi-canism It has been tried in the balances 1 bal-ances of time and found wanting and we have to seek relief elsewhere lut where shall we find it Can it be found in the democratic party and its principles prin-ciples I answer unqualifiedly yes The principles of the democratic party are those on which a true republic Is ioundtd Equal justice to all being one of its cardinal virtues with that principle standing out foremost in its belief The working man who is the i foundation of all a countrys prosperity A prosper-ity must Bud will be cared for legislated legis-lated for and protected and in the coming struggle for supremacy at the polls every wageearner who has his own and familys wellbeing at heart or any man who hasjeeen the encroachment that wealth has made in the past century of the worlds history his-tory and how it is securing for itself all the benefits of legislation must in all reason and protection to himself and future generations working men yote for the adoption of democratic principles that the gold bugs of the 11 country must be stayed in their evil confiscation of all the good that is in life and let their fellows who are poor f have the protection from the ills of life that they are justly entitled to both mans laws and that of our Great Creator In conclusion I would say to all thinking men decide befoie the chains of republican rule are so fastened about you that you have no escape Be true to yourselves and spurn the goldite rule that will make you bondsmen bonds-men forever Yours truly J BECK It was first met with in Tiers 1Movr man and meant one of tbe
