BB Tne dpmocratic party of Utah in B convention assembled, reposing its H trust in the intelligence, patriotism H and justice of the people standing H upon the constitution as a loundation H and limitation of the powers of the gov H ernment as well as the guaranty -of the H liberties of the citizen congratulate Hj the territory now soon to be a state H on tbe assured success of the policy Hj adopted by the national organization B as laid down in all its platlorms. HK For the democracy of the entire ter- H! ritory we jeaffirm our fath in tbe per- HHJ manence ot federal union and our HH revotion to the constitution and the HflB laws; and declare as cardinal doctriues B of democracy: H Firet Absolute acquiescence in the H will ol the majority as a vital principle H of the democratic party. H Second Total separation of church H and state lor tbe sake alike of civil and Hj religious liberty. j Third The liberty of the individual Hj unvesed by sumptuary laws. H Fourth Support by the state of the HH public schools. HH Fifth The supremacy of the ciyil H oyer the military power. H aixth Exact equality of all persons H before the law. H Seventh The right to a free 1 allot H the right preservative of all other BH Eighth That our democratic party HHB is the friend of tbe laboring man in Hl every avocation of life, and will pro- IH tect hL interest alike againpt the & HH greesions of monopoly as well as the H commune. H We believe the restoration of the H money of the constitution is now the H paramount ifsub before the country, H and insist that both parties shall HH plaiuly state their respectiye post ione K upon the question in order that the H voters may intelligently es press their H preference. We therefore declare our- HH Belve? in favor of the immediate res- H toration of tbe tree and unlimited H cainastc of oid end silver at the pres- H ent legal ratio of 16 to 1, &b such coin- B age existed prior to 1S73, without wait- B ing for the aid or consent of any other Hl nation. Gold and silver coiu to be a H full and let;al tender for all debts pub- H lie and private. iH We denounce the republican party Hj for the demonetization of silver in 1S73 Hj and for its repeated acts of hostility to- H ward itB remonetizatiou. H We call atten ion to tbe fact that the jH country was in the throes of a financial H panic when the democratic aumims- H tration assumed central m 1893,and we H congratulate the people upon the ap- B pioaching reign of prosperity as a re- H suit of a democratic reform of the tar- H iff; and also to the fact that factories, I H foundarits and mills have resumed H work since the repeal of the McKinley Hi law, and to the constantly advancme B wages of workingmen in almost every H industry. B We again express our hearty appre- BH ciation of the democratic congreBB and H president in providing an enabling act B by virtue of which Utab is about to as- BB eume its position as a sovereign state. HH Wo commend the action of the dem- BB ocratic members of tbe constitutional HB convention in surrounding the taxing BH acd revenue-raising power of the state HB by euch restrictions and limitations as R to preclude any squandering ot public lf property lu HU ot private writer prises, IHB and to confine tbe expenees of carrying BR on the public businesa within proper IBH limits of economy, despite tbe altuo'st HB unanimous opposition of a republican H majority. Anl we fayor the adoption H of the proposed constitution. BH e congratulate the women of Utah IB upon their admission to equal political BB rights with men under the provisions HB 1 tie constitution proposed, and the BB democratic party for the earnest and B aDe support of that measure by its H representatives in the constitutional IB convention. BH We denounce as false the charge BHH thnt the democratic party of Utah has BlH been cuilty ot Btuffing ballot boxes or BB otner election frauds, and condemn iHH the republican party for its un- H warranted and libelous attack upon BH the maioritv of the Utah commission. HHB and deplore the lack of principle H shown by its attempt without any B evidence and for partisan purposes to H besmirch the character of honorable BH citizens |
