Show l REPUBLICANISM VS UTAH The republican party is thirty seven years old It has been in power every year of its existence save for the last eighteen months Utah asked for statehood firtyfive years since she has asked for it every eiuce the republican re-publican pftity has been in power A steady refusal was received The pretests pre-tests upon which this refusal was wa1c are infinite in numb2r and range fiom comic to severe from grave to gay Not one piece of fayorable legislation I in all those years On the contrary one indignity after another one perSecution per-secution after another one hardship after another one bitter result after another was offered by the national government to poor helpless Utah loyal honest and patriotic Utah American to the core and loving the United States with inexpressible ten dernesejateady as the needle to the pole to American sentiments and not one single reason why she should not be admitted was kept out all these years And it is said that now to show her whipped dog humility she is going to vote for the party which persecuted her and treated her with contumely all I iii j Jjhjjgp long years It is ajltuel slander upon a pet pie entirely innocent of the least shadow of such aniutention If the republican party could point to a single act of decent toleration or one petty service or any kind or any act resembling re-sembling in the least degree hearty manly toleration or confidence it would not be so bad but thirty seven years of unbroken unrelieved hostility is hardly the preparation to make to ask the votes and the fealty of such a people as are those of Utah I The simple asking is but another bitter bit-ter insult offered to the people Utah may owe allegiance too political combination but it is certainly not to the republican party This party has maligned her noble women and insulted in-sulted and despitefully treated her manhood and did every thing in its I i power to retard and hold back her progress And yet despite all this it has the superb and wonderful impudence to come before this people to ask for the suffrages of her people to replace it in power No word of apology for the cruel past No word of sorrow or regret jtfo word of promise for the future The offensive offen-sive leaders of the offensive and reeking reek-ing past still enthroned in power still leading her hosts The Tribune With all of its bitterness of the past unat toned for unapologized for giving the law to the party to the illustrious t ous churchmen now for some darkly Inscrutible reason enrolled under its banners or rather the banners of the k publican party This is a state of tJ things which could exist in no other I state or country on earth It is too good too forgiving Tbo tune of theo the-o ther f h Hk doctrine of the holy scriptures scrip-tures is carried to nn extent never contemplated by the Divine Author who is called a just God as well as a loving God This party and this paper pa-per have both insulted the Mormon L t people in the most cruel way year in and year out for thirty yeais even going go-ing to the extent of calling their children child-ren bastards and their wives by the I most opprobrious titles tile language is I capable of fashioning It is time that Utah began the great I and solemn duty of resenting these things and the only as it is the most effective way in which it can do this work is to go to the polls and vote solidly against its men |
