When the present city administration took over the affairs of Eureka City, on the third day of the present month, it waa the general opinion among local people that the treasury contained approximately $3,000.00, with an additional $10,000.00 dne the' city from taxes for 1921. This is absolutely wrong and it is for the purpose of telling the taxpayers the actual condition of the city affairs that I, as mayor, make this statement On December 31ft, 1921, according to the financial statement published in the Eureka Reporter, there was a cash balance of $5,430.70, of this amount $3,409.15 belongs to the library fund, which leaves the city a balance of $2,021.55. This was correct Then on the morning of . January 3rd, after the financial statement had been prepared and just prior to turning over the affairs to the Socialist administration, the Citizen administration met and issued warrants for outstanding bills to the amount of $2,356.29, leaving an overdraft of $334.79. The old administration also leaves 'outstanding bills of nearly $2,000.00, most of this sum being for the chemical engine for the firemen. Instead of the old administration leaving a cash balance of over $2,000.00 they are leaving an overdraft of nearly $3,000.00. The financial statement also says that there is about $10,000.00 due the city from taxes. Tins is also exaggerated somewhat. The above amount would be due the city providing all of the taxes are collected, but there is always a percentage which is never paid and this year the delinquent tax list is much larger than usual, hence we will be fortunate if we receive more than $6,000.00 as the citys share of the remaining tax money. It is my honest belief that if we had all the tax money in and had paid all the outstanding bills the treasury would have leu than $2,000.00. This is a very small sum indeed when compared to the amount the Citizens party of- -. fleers had at the time they went into office two years ago, when there was a balance in the treasury of ap- Star till tics To Be Reopeced Stott took hospitals at Salt Wednesday of this week, an Ulnesa of several following montha.
